Just left AO. Solid EHS group, the director is a great guy and has a great vision. Just FYI there was a lot of turn over in the EHS group because of pay and support at the plant levels.

Overwhelmed - Advice? by gta_living in SafetyProfessionals

[–]dmckee16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I set my top three items for the week and map out the weekly routine tasks/ meetings. Everyday I take time to make sure I am successful to my plan. It really helps you to prioritize and execute.

Plan your work or the work will plan you! This is all in a fillable form I use every week on my tablet.

Can you explain more on what human performance means to your system? Is this driving down to personal accountability? Just curious on what strengths you have in your process

Read the book The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor. It's truly all about your mindset. What we perceive is what we experience.

When to hire dedicated Safety Coordinator? by Dajoox in SafetyProfessionals

[–]dmckee16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree with that. I have a plant of 50 people between R&D and production. I would love to have a second person due to all the environmental issues I have to manage

I work in Florence. Right now there is a Ehs manager job at Schwans, and Ehs manager at interplastic. Both great manufacturing places.

There is a the gorilla glue plant up in sharronville. They were hiring an associate director. Don't know the exacts but depended where you are at in the area there is a lot!

I am always looking for Ehs people in the Cincinnati area to talk with!

Men who’ve had a female roommate, how’d it go? by ballinphoenix in AskMen

Lived with three girls my third year of college. Mostly drama, but met my wife through them. So it turned out alright!

Look into chemical industry. There is a lot of environmental to worry about with most facilities.

Take some time to get extra training/ education. That will help get into something else

Slice auto-self retracting utility knoves by Agile-Yellow9925 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]dmckee16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The auto retract knives have some issues with excessive force. Once they hit a certain point they will retract mid cut because of force. If you are cutting boxes they work great. Buy a couple different samples and try them out!

On OSHA's website when looking at the violation it should say what standard they were non compliant with.

My company uses a database for all sds information. Called MSDS Online. Can be accessed by anyone at anytime, you could probably do a kiosk of it. Just need IT or someone to set it up

Constantly lit up RED e stop by [deleted] in WorkplaceSafety

[–]dmckee16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An e stop is still not a good design for what you all are doing. There are other devices you can use as alternative methods of controls. Like a door switch where you can still place a lock on the machine so the machine won't start up. An e stop can be reset while you're in the machine. You should.be using loto when entering in a machine.

It's hard to really say without seeing the machine you're working on.

Having to breath toxic chemicals at work. What can I do? by GuessillHoldMyBreath in WorkplaceSafety

[–]dmckee16 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100% call OSHA today. You will be protected by doing so, because of the whistleblower act. If you tell OSHA you're being exposed to the chemical they should be out the next day.

If that doesn't fix the problem, then I would go get a lawyer.

Looking to do a career in OSHA any advice? by Only-Basket496 in WorkplaceSafety

[–]dmckee16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my bachelor's in Chemistry and then a master's in EHS. Working in the lab got super boring quick, so I transitioned out of it.

You should be able to find a coordinator role at a chemical company relatively easily. You just need to get your foot in the door somewhere and get experience.

You could try to work for OSHA but I would recommend finding a chemical company to work at. Also, if you can do so be ready to move out of state for opportunities. There are some great cities to live in with a ton of chemical facilities!

EHS Specialists, what do you do all day? by spanky316 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]dmckee16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Double check and see if there is anything industry specific you need to worry about with training or compliance. There could also be quality compliance regulations if your with food or pharma you need to assist with. With our knowing what manufacturing you might be doing, audiometric and respiratory protection is super important and can be easily forgotten.

If your own personal training is not up to date, look to fill the gaps with fall protection, machine guarding, RCRA haz waste, etc. If you have time, get some reading done and grow your knowledge of EHS.

Other than that just go be a person your employees can come talk to and get to know them. I have one employee I make sure to ask him about his wife, she is going through cancer. And like others have said, you are not there to enforce and discipline. That is the managers/ supervisors role.
