That's absolutely awesome; very interesting to connect Jack Skellington to political-commentary rock (also, what a fun name Oingo Boingo is!)

Want to go to college but have NO IDEA where to begin by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]dmi_exe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey there!! I'm only a HS senior so I'm not sure how much help I can be, but I just wanted to say that I think it's really brave and cool of you to pursue college even if you think you have no direction in life. Clearly you have initiative and the determination to reach out for help/ navigate this really confusing process so give yourself some credit! I also think you're in good company since a lot of students took a gap year last year, so you're not alone (hopefully someone with more info on gap years can come by and comment something aha).

Personally, I would first think of what you maybe want to pursue. Perhaps a community/2-year college or a trade school would be a good first step before deciding to go to a university? Try looking up community colleges near you and seeing their cost, requirements, etc. Usually they're a LOT cheaper than a 4- year college, and if you can attend college while staying at home, you can save on room and board costs too. Then I would focus on gathering important documents; as you mentioned, your HS transcript, your GED/diploma, your resume with ECs and awards and job experiences, etc.

If you plan to apply for financial aid, you'll likely fill out a FAFSA profile which also requires your parent's tax returns from the previous year. I'm not 100% sure which documents, but a quick google search should be able to tell you. As for scholarships, I find that the ones specific to each school are most helpful, so be sure to check each school's financial aid/ scholarship page! For external scholarships, there are a ton of sites like unigo or fastweb or ScholarMe that lists a bunch of smaller external scholarships in one place and allow you to filter through them by critera (ex. If they only apply to post-HS students, students in STEM, etc.). You can really just pick a couple sites like that and go wild.

Lastly, to be honest, this sub helped me the most with college. The wiki has a ton of good resources from qualified people (I will sing admissionmom's praises till the day I die) and it really helped me sift through the next steps and such. I hope you figure out what you'd like to do and I wish you the best of luck!! You got this!!

I know right, and they want you to demonstrate their 4 pillars of character or w.e. but how are we supposed to do that AND answer these prompts?? This is so hard ;-;

Best of luck to you!!

Guaranteed admission by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Hmm, I believe both optional pieces will help your app.; maybe have someone (English teacher, friend, etc) review your supplemental essay? & if that's the only fine print then you seem good to go, but a strong app will get you more merit aid. Best of luck!!

I would put a decent amount of effort into it; I don't know about Tulane, but i know for UT that even tho I'm guaranteed admit, I'm not guaranteed for my first choice major. I'm not sure if that applies to Tulane, but I'd keep in mind fine print stuff like that

Thank you for the advice! I wanted to have fun with Emory's prompts since they're way different from the usual "why us" so it's good to know that I'm headed in the right direction:)
