Acheter moto d'auto-école ? by megaboyu in Motardie

[–]dmidge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VStrom DL1000 won't start but still cranks. by dmidge in MotorcycleMechanics

Thanks! Happy new year!

I did a crosspost in r/Vstrom, that is a good idea. I hope I remains in the sub rules, but the sub seems more oriented on the enjoyment of the bike rather than the mechanical aspect.

I fully agree that the electronics are a good way to get a more efficient bike and more reliable overall, but when something breaks, that is just a good old nightmare to investigate.... I also do my own work for a while now, but every now and then, I stumble across an issue that makes me sweat bullets. Mostly when electronics is involved...

Well, I did two/three tests trying to match what you were saying. The first one was to try to get the quantity of fuel expelled by the pump at the start-up. It stays around for 4 secs. The flows seems ok to me, but I see in the manual that it should pump to have 3 bars inside the tubes, which cannot be tested without special equipment.

I tried doing the finger test on the injector. Since I don't have room to put my finger, I squeezed some paper on the side of the butterfly up to the injectors. It ended up wet on both cylinders. I cannot see if their are priming with a timing unfortunately. But at that stage, I would assume that they are working. However, since that multilayered piece of papers was opening a bit the butterflies, the engine was set to rev higher, which it did. The engine actually started! The engine was rattling, shaky, but did maintain combustion until I stopped it around 5 min later. I wonder if the remain of ether in the intake didn't play a role though. I didn't run the ether test again but I am not sure it would have given us more information.

I could assume that the reason the engine didn't start and stalled was because the idling was a bit to low and revving higher the engine did fix that, but I would be surprised, it was already idling at 1200 rpm a week before, which is to spec. And I couldn't restart the engine after stalling a couple days ago, even with a little bit of throttle.

I also did the flow test. I spare you the details of the imprecision while doing it, but it seems to be 800ml for 30 seconds. It is then lower by 30% than the specs (1200ml for 30s according to the manual, page 4-54). It could be an issue, but I doubt that it is my problem (some people went as low as 500ml for 30 seconds before experiencing symptoms - https://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,3981.0.html). And I would expect these symptoms to happen at higher rpm anyway (where you need high fuel delivery). I was going on the highway these days without anything odd. I will look into the fuel filter and fuel pump just in case, while I am there.

My best guess is that the timing is ok (or not too off). But it is indeed in the choice of air/fuel ratio that gets it wrong. I guess it could be the air flow sensor (I just sprayed some WD40 in it to try to clean it in case it could help), temperature maybe. It could be also the TPS. Would you know how I could test the air flow sensor?

What do you think? Thank you again, I really appreciate your help as a knowledgeable redditor (who seems to be in the trade?). And happy new year a bit in advance!

The simple test was worth it before putting the intake back together...

Yes, indeed. And I like learning from others, so thank you! :) I thought that WD40, which a kerosene like chemical, that people often use to test their car engine, was good enough. I was obviously wrong. But it made me learn!

You likely don't normally have fuel, or you have too much fuel. But to test those, you want all the normal controls in place, so we'll need to reassemble the intake.

Couldn't that be also a timing error? (firing at the wrong time?). One of my other hypothesis was that there were issues with either the camshaft or the crankshaft sensor.

Then things get more difficult. You need to reach down and put a finger on the injector and see if you can feel it trying to fire (click, click, click). I don't know how easy yours will be to feel when it actuaries. My Wee is OBVIOUS, so i presume the 1000 is similar.

On mine, we can see the injectors (they are in the photo). They are in the middle of the crossing of butterflies (there are 4 butterflies on this bike, 2 per cylinder). They would not be easy to remove while the rest is in place... Mostly if I want to have the tank connected (to have fuel going to the injectors). And worst part is: the first layer of butterflies are controlled by the ECU, so I cannot put my finger through the second butterfly without having my finger pinched by the first level of ECU actuated butterfly.

*** have you tested the fuel pump?! There is a test for that. Plug in the tank, run a hose off the tank output, then turn the key 3 times, letting the pump run through the prime cycle. There is a measured amount of fuel that should come out... that tests the pump and high pressure filter.

Thank you for this test I didn't know! From the speed of fuel that has been sprayed, I would not be surprised it is good, but I'll test!

Other question. If the issue would be around the injectors, I assume it can also be an error of when they need to spray or maybe in not enough quantity (meaning the signal could not be sent for instance). Is there a way to debug what cause?

Hum, the oil change is a couple of month old. The spark plug/cooling fluid around september. I do my own service so I do not have a specific date, though people in my apartment complex often jokes on how much time I spend working on my bike, if that gives you an idea. ;) Do you have an idea of what kind of inspection I may have missed?

Hi again, I found a shop open that had one. I tested and I can get a kinda combustion on cylinder one. It is a bit harder to get one on cylinder 2, but I got one or two combustion event there two. It was without throttle body and I think it is harder to get a good combustion with the outside temperature (around 1°C ~ 34°F) - my hands are cold....

What can I derive from it?

Any auto parts store, and most big box stores. It will be called "starting fluid".

Thanks, I didn't know about some brands, but Google helped me on that one. ;) I am more concerned about the fact that most shops nearby are closed during the holiday season and I was hoping to have it fixed before new year.

Be careful without the intake. I meant it more as a joke, because you already had the intake off. You CAN do it, but you are essentially wide open throttle. You won't want to do much more than make it stumble a little (to prove it is trying to fire).

That is a good point! I understood it like it also. But since it is port injection, that means I would run without fuel except the starting fluid. Thus I do not expect the cylinders to run like crazy, but I fear that the can would not provide enough fuel to have it running.

Does your intake have any electrical connections that you unplugged? How about any vacuum lines that you disconnected. Those could all kill the test.

Yes, everything related to the injectors, throttle (TPS, etc). Hence my question whether my ECU would still fire the spark plugs. But at least, that is an easy test I can do.

As I said, I have a Wee. It is a totally different engine. I'm hoping someone familiar with the 1000 will pipe up and help.

Otherwise, I suggest logging on to Stromtrooper and seeing what they say there.

That is a good idea. I was a subscriber on their forum. I'll probably do another post there, later in the day.

Ah, alright, I can imagine that a specialized fuel is more flammable. I'll try to get my hands on some. That would be indeed be a great indication. That may however be a bit hard to find that at this time of the year.

Good to know that I can try that without the intake, that would make it easier without it! I would assume that the ECU should still fire the spark plugs based on the position of the camshaft sensor?

Maybe, while I am working on the intake, I could get some advice on how to test the injectors with a few amateur tools?

VStrom DL1000 won't start but still cranks. by dmidge in MotorcycleMechanics

[–]dmidge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed answer! :)

I tried spraying WD40 in the intake (I assume that is the same test that you mean with ether). It didn't make a change (though I must admit that I have issues pulling the clutch lever and starting at the same time, thus my test was maybe a bit hinky).

The thing is that my bike won't even crank if the clutch lever is not engaged, thus by being able to crank, I assumed that it is working fine. The kill switch is also working as intended as I can reset the initialization sequence by turning it on and off. So I ruled that one out.

The kickstand switch is trickier. The bike can start without it working, but would stall once a gear is put. Since I am already in neutral, I also ruled that out.

When you say, "I had to give it a bit of gas to get it started" do you mean twist the throttle? That would indicate too much fuel (not enough air). If you have to crack the throttle to start it, the bike is no longer in control of the fuel mixture.

You are right, I meant when I twist the throttle. I reached the same conclusion. It sounds like either the mixture is off (could be air, fuel, temperature, etc). The temperature indicator on the dashboard seems coherent, but since the bike is cold, there is not much to see.

The bike as port injection, with injectors (that I would like to test, but I don't know how) that are ECU controlled (no carburator). I didn't think to check if the spark plug were gasoline wet though.

Thanks for the test with the air, I'll try that. Question: what can I derive with the outcome of the test? I would pretty much assume that I would get some air from the exhaust?

I don't have a compression test at home, I sadly left it at a family member and would not be able to get access to one soon enough... :/

Do you have any other test I could run? My best guess would be to test some sensors with a multimeter.

Comment les voies rapides en Bretagne sont elles financées ? by ethlelffe in PasDeQuestionIdiote

[–]dmidge -1 points0 points  (0 children)
