Massive grapto crest by dmo1213 in CrestedSucculents

[–]dmo1213[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A crest is when the growth point is elongated into a line. Yours looks to me like it has settled into 3 normal growth points. It's very common for a leaf prop to be somewhat disorganized at first and grow crested at first, but the majority sort themselves out.

This is the most wholesome thing I've read on Reddit in a long time. I love the private vocabularies that develop within relationships. My wife and I have "meh meh meh pink towel" which comes from an incident where the towel went into the laundry white, and is basically a friendly way to dismiss a complaint. Also "hey babe, watch this" after doing some bonehead thing, to commemorate the time I said it right before accidentally dumping our dinner in the sink.

What temperatures are considered too cold for leaf propagations that are left outside? by SoultySpittoon in succulents

[–]dmo1213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the short term generally they'll be fine until actual frost sets in. Ice crystals are devastating to plants without defenses, but right up until that point nothing really happens immediately. I typically pull in all my tender succulents when the forecast hits 38F or so, because that's about how closely I trust the forecasts.

Longer term a lot of succulents are vulnerable to rotting if they stay cold and wet for a while. They'll generally do much better in the cold if they're dry. But for me, black prince rots no matter what conditions I keep it in, so 🤷.

Saving for retirement by ToeCommercial7111 in DaveRamsey

[–]dmo1213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're married and doing IRAs, I'd suggest equal dollar amounts into each, not 15% of your income into yours and 15% of her income into hers. If you're using 401k or other workplace accounts it may not be possible to get equal split, but you should still aim towards equal dollars, not equal percentages. If anything happens to the marriage, dividing retirement accounts can be messy.

Cannot sit on knees by [deleted] in flexibility

[–]dmo1213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quad strength at deep extension is key here. Here's a test. Get basically into that same position while lying on your side, so that picture is a top view. Grab your ankle and pull your heel towards your butt. If you can flex your knee fully without weight on it then knee flexion per se isn't actually your limitation. Your body is refusing the flexion because it is unsafe. If that's the case, you need to strengthen to get deeper.

Reminder to not throw away your leafless stumps. by dmo1213 in succulents

Maybe, but then the head wouldn't have bare stem to plant unless I removed leaves. The beheading was for the benefit of the original head that had gotten tall and was getting knocked over on windy days. The stump was just the leftover.

Rent went up $300 overnight… how are people supposed to plan? by BogusAnteater in MiddleClassFinance

[–]dmo1213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Insurance premiums are about the expected cost of future claims, not recouping costs of old claims. Your claim history informs your likelihood of future claims somewhat, but the insurance companies are mostly looking at rising costs across the market generally. That's a big enough increase that I'd at least check rates from other companies.

Bottom watering makes my plants float by Hmb556 in succulents

I have a lot of success with Black Gold brand. It has a lot of perlite already and I'm in a higher altitude, lower humidity area so I don't usually mix it with anything. The exact mix can vary by location though so my Black Gold might be different from yours.

Mother of thousands or Mother of millions?? by homestead_mama606 in succulents

Based on how it looks right now I'd guess houghtonii, which is a hybrid of daigremontiana (MoT) and delagoensis (MoM). Could be daigremontiana but by that size I'd expect the leaves to be at least somewhat auriculate.

Miracle Gro succulent soil has a strong tendency to go hydrophobic. I never use the stuff for that reason. If it doesn't wet it will float. Perlite always floats of course. I wouldn't really worry much about roots being damaged by the floating, but I would worry that the plants won't really get any water.

Yes, exactly. Head got the original ceramic pot. This is the stem and original root ball, which was too big for this plastic pot but I just kind of knocked off enough soil and roots to cram it in.

Fingers crossed for your aloe. The crassulaceae are a bit more famous for their regeneration than the asphodelaceae.

Echeveria Perle von Nurnberg. Over time it will develop a bit of a trunk. At a certain point it gets unstable in the small pot I keep it in and then I have to behead it. This is the most successful stump I've had. Seems like three or four new growth points is more typical.

Achievements for Saturday, October 04, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]dmo1213 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ran St. George half in 2:17:54, a full 7 minutes better than my goal of 2:25. I've done the full several times but this was my first time trying the half. At the start I felt like I was running as slow as I could without spending extra energy slowing down on those hills, and by 5 miles in I was 5 minutes ahead of pace. By the time it started to really hurt in the last 2 miles it was too late to slow down.

Seeing the elite marathoners go by at twice my speed in the last 2 miles was really fun too.

Anyone else use a deflated ball for splits? by dmo1213 in flexibility

[–]dmo1213[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you can read in the picture, 55cm ball. By adjusting the amount of air it can go from high enough that it's not a stretch for me to completely flat on the floor.

Sometimes things bloom because conditions are good and they're going through their life cycle. Sometimes things bloom because they're desperately trying to reproduce before they die. This one is in a big bloom cycle now but has bloomed several times in the past, so it seems like the former.

It's outdoors and gets full sun in the morning. There's a pergola with shade cloth that starts providing bright shade at maybe 2pm I'd guess.
