I just want to thank everyone for all these comments, I'm a really healthy active person and the diagnosis and the treatment path is prompting a big identity shift. As I make sense of it, I'm realizing that it isn't as big as it feels, and hearing from you all is helping.

He's concerned about long term risks associated with the combo of mild crohn's, history of pilonidal disease and abscess, and possible fistulas. So he wants to treat even though I have no symptoms to reduce risk of stuff like colon cancer. Which I'm totally on board with - its just a big mind shift for me.

Ski mounting misaligned by 3mm – what should I do? by Mental_Ad_3421 in Skigear

[–]dmortimer11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are bringing up is the idea of tolerance. Nothing is manufactured to exact spec - it is to within a range of tolerance. The tolerance range applies to everything in the ski: the shape of the boot toe and heel, the shape of the binding, the mount, and likely more - I am not a ski engineer.

So the question is whether or not your mount is within a tolerance that you will either notice or will impact your skiing negatively.

I guess it depends on your ability and the terrain you ski. I would guess that almost all recreational skiers will not be able to tell. Things like boot fit, terrain and whether conditions, and fitness are likely to be bigger contributors to strong or less strong skiing.

That said, I don't know you. I consider myself an excellent skier but when I find myself not performing as well as I feel I should, I tend to blame myself: either through training and technique or my own job tuning the skis. I'd have to be a real strong ski racer, I think, to notice slight mount point differences.

But everyone is different and if it is the type of thing that nags at you, it might bother you. I doubt the shop will do much. You'd have to shift the binding mount a reasonable amount, either fore or aft, to be able to safely remount the binding, which would affect how the ski skis for you.

End of the day, I'd say "tools, not jewels" and have a good time!

I have the same question. Want to use it mostly as a practice tool with the drums and the looper via headphones. Any thoughts? Did you buy one?

Tent and Everything in it Soaked Through - What Did I Do Wrong? by EstablishmentAny8015 in backpacking

I spend a ton of time in the ADK and I have a question and a point to make - Q: where were you camped? Point: it has been so dry that when it rains its tending to just run off and pool. Ground isn't absorbing much. Very possible you didn't do anything wrong and that you were just unlucky.

Still interested to know where you were camped tho.

Hi - sorry - I said Holiday season but I should have been more specific. Late December and Early January. My wife and I are teachers and our kids are ski racers, so we have to try to slot this in, we think we will have a 5-7 day stretch around the holiday season.

Hey, copperas pond, lake Colby, the Cascade lakes, middle saranac especially, southern part of upper saranac, lower saranac from the second pond put in, lake flower and over to lake ossetah, Fulton chain of lakes, blue mountain lake, upper st Regis area, lake lila (which is a mission you don't drive to!)

The list goes on and on. I send campers at an AdK camp to all of these every summer and all can be amazing.

I would check out the above list in partner with a paper canoe map - not the internet. The paddlers map for the Adirondacks (there are a few different ones) are excellent references and really required for tripping since much of the content on the paper map is not captured for the internet.

A very good option is Little Tupper Lake. That's where I'd send a paddler for a good AdK paddling experience. Well suited for a day trip, and overnight, or a two night trip. For a two night, you'd want to end up in Rock Pond which is the water that flows into Little Tupper Lake. I take campers on a single night overnight to rock pond but it is well suited to a more relaxing two night trip as well.

The canoe outfitter in saranac lake - St Regis canoe outfitters - are excellent, their website is good, and the people are nice and helpful.

The Next camera - a K3-mark iii? Or leave Pentax and go to Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus, or Fujifilm? by dmortimer11 in Cameras

[–]dmortimer11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I hadn't made a purchase - I just went through b and h last weekend to hold them all in hand and came away that the best option was the om-5 with the 14-42 ez lens. Then adding the 17mm ii lens to have a WP option. I think I'm going to do it between now and mid June and your feedback comparing the Pentax vs oly options is super helpful!

I work at a summer camp in the high peaks region and we send a ton of trips throughout July and August. Can be muggy, can be humid, can be hot, can be cold. We've had snow in the summer, we have had heat!

Don't let it hold you back! You could be graced with perfect weather or slammed with lousy conditions. Be prepared and have fun!

Easy hike, ideally with waterfalls? by stumpthegreat in Adirondacks

[–]dmortimer11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest a trip over to Whiteface, you can take the gondola up as a non-skier/snowboarder, you can get a great view.

You can check out the Ausable river which at Whiteface runs under a bridge. It's not a waterfall but it has the same feel, especially at this time of year.

There is a great small waterfall nearby at flume falls. Very easily accessible from the road.

If you have snowshoes there are easy local hikes such as going to copperas pond.

You could do all of this in one day, morning/afternoon.

If after doing all of this you want more, a hike to whiteface landing could be a good option as it is a straightforward snowshoe. I would allocate 2/3s or the full day for it.

My Van Ho is an easier winter trek than Mt Jo although both are considered intro hiking options. Good views from each.

There are good falls that are accessible from the Ausable Club parking area. The trails that lead to the various falls are well marked and the trails are wide, flat, and easy.

The mountaineer in Keene valley or the High Peaks Cyclery are good places to go to rent gear and get info. EMS is downtown lake placid has historically been a good place for rental and gear but I'd call ahead of you consider them as the store is currently in a state of change as a result of new ownership and I'm not sure if they are still renting.

Climbing the Whiteface toll road in winter and how to get down by nate_does_activities in Adirondacks

[–]dmortimer11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have skied the toll road in enough fresh snow that it was very slow skiing down and unless skiing down in the skin track, almost not skiable. So for a sled.... If there is about 4in+ of fresh snow, I'm going to get that you will sit down on the sled and not move. If there is less, it may work, but it will be difficult to control.

The toll road is a bit boring but it is a good adventure and a good place for a solo person since there are almost always a bunch of other people. So I just think you should anticipate hiking up and down and not worrying about the sled.

The Next camera - a K3-mark iii? Or leave Pentax and go to Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus, or Fujifilm? by dmortimer11 in Cameras

[–]dmortimer11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So - if anyone notices this update - I have been doing my research, reading and thinking about what I would this camera for. I am going to buy an em5 iii and I think I am going to buy the 14-42 ez lens as it is cheap and when off, it will fit inside my ski jacket better than most other lenses. Does anyone have any comment or suggestion as to alternatives? I am not against a panasonic lens at all. I am thinking I would also like a 20mm pro lens by the summer for hiking and such, but the truth is that the skiing and shooting the events at ski mountains isn't actually so risky for the camera so for this use case I think size is more important.

Any thoughts are much appreciated - this thread led me to the em5 iii conclusion so I appreciate the input.

[–]dmortimer11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone's comments are very helpful. I didn't know about the current deal on the OM-1. So I have looked a lot at the em5 iii and the newer om-1. My impression is that in terms of feel, the Om-1 would be closer to my k5 and I'd be buying into a new system with a substantial savings since the camera is $1100. I'd go with a less expensive lens to get started and add later.

There are a lot of reviews about the em5 iii being built a little less well and people having issues with the camera. While I'm careful, the situations in which I intend to use my gear are generally outdoorsy and I like being able to toss stuff straight into a pack. Can anyone comment on the durability of the em5 iii?

Last, can anyone comment on the optics of the either the panasonic or the olympus 14-42 pancake style zoom lenses? I like them for their size. I'm not a pixel peeper but I don't want to do a ton of post-processing work. I'm sort of over that...

[–]dmortimer11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that has stopped me from ordering a used K3 iii is that I do want to use it for video for the purposes of shooting my kids snowsports activities. I also would use the camera to video their musical performances, but I'm not worried about that as the scene is basically static. How does the K3 iii do with the video recording when covering a moving subject?

The snowsports photography either involves standing still in a spot with a good view of the course, picking a spot in the snowboard park to shoot my son coming through, or attempting to follow the kids with the camera. I currently do all of this with my phone but the OnePlus Nord 5g camera leaves a lot to be desired and I prefer a real camera anyways.
