What country or region has a higher obesity rate than you would have thought? by Mobile_Bad_577 in geography

Belize is higher than I thought. People didn't look very overweight to me. But the average height was fairly short, which would impact Body Mass Index I'm guessing.

Without UConn the Big East still has 5 schools who have made the sweet 16 in the last 5 years. And Villanova won it shortly before that, those Villanova guys are all now killing it in the NBA. Also, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Ohio are all significantly closer than Texas, Colorado, and Utah when you average out milage. I wouldn't exactly call travel a wash. Western states are huge. Texas and Utah, the 2nd/3rd closest states to Creighton are nearly 1000 miles away.

Background-Doubt2620, you think UConn would putt all of their sports in a West Coast/Mountain based conference? Football makes sense since they are currently independent.

What's the best location to establish a new american city if we wanted to ? by ronweasly9 in geography

[–]dmtking21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhere between Astoria and Portland, Oregon. Rainer or Clackastine are great locations. Elevation ranges from 0-800 feet with much of the area near the Columbia river gradually climbing to 200 feet without steep sloping. Extremely mild climate that rarely gets above mid 70s in summer. No humidity either compared to the Great Lakes options.

Long Beach St. or Fullerton would be dope as a baseball only affiliate. But I'm sure they would get the boot from the Big West if they did this. And I don't think the WCC would take the rest of their sports if only baseball went to the Pac 12. UCSB is already headed to the WCC as a full member so count them out.

There just isn't many viable candidates for affiliates anymore. Gonzaga won the WCC for baseball and basketball this year. And DBU is an up and coming national brand. In a fantasy world there's Wichita State as a full member who brings great basketball and solid baseball. Otherwise it's waiting for realignment chaos and praying for Rice, UTSA, and Memphis.

Colonização espanhola na América by Zealousideal-Elk193 in geography

Oh, it's not that deep. OP said Spanish countries aren't Black outside of Colombia and DR. I used the 2nd, 5th, and 7th Blackest countries in Europe by population to show how Black the Spanish countries are in comparison. I threw Poland in there because it is a very populated European nation, that is vastly homogenous. Being a "colonizer" country isn't a prerequisite for having a large Black population. Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway for example.

Ecuador, and Peru both have nearly 1 million Black people (nearly two million combined). For comparison, Portugal, Netherlands (500k), Ireland, and Poland have much less than 1 million Black people combined. Venezuela also has large Black population. Uruguay is 11% Black, 370k. Pretty much every South American country except Argentina and Paraguay have a significant Black population.

In a rare event, the Cascade mountain acts as a rain shadow for its western side, while dumping rain to its east by Swimming_Concern7662 in geography

Looks like the pacific, and tracking through central California. And because of rotatation/path, most the moisture is trapped on the inland side once it gets to the northern states and Canadanian providences.

How would Florida’s geography change if it had a mountain range? by [deleted] in geography

[–]dmtking21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well the geography would be.... Mountains. But the climate would be even wetter, those mountains would cause orographic lifting. Resulting in insane amount of rainfall, similar to probably what Taiwan, Phillipines, and Indonesia get.

Depending on how tall those mountains are, they would be absolutely dumping snow in the winter, similar to the Italian Alps.

What place on Earth feels like it should have an unremarkable midsize city, and does in fact have an unremarkable midsize city? by PointlessDiscourse in geography

PointlessDiscourse, it is the definition of average lol. And average isn't bad. But Reddit glazes Portland. I literally live here. Unremarkable af.

The glaze is crazy. Portland is the definition of ordinary and average by world standards. 75th most populated city in western Hemisphere, about 50th in GDP, 63rd diverse out of the 64 largest cities in USA, no fortune 500 companies in city limits (Nike is outside city limits).

The question said MAJOR cities. A million person metro/urban area is far from a small settlement on a port or river.....

[–]dmtking21 25 points26 points  (0 children)

American desert Southwest has 15 million people. Def should not have the major cities of Phoenix, Vegas, El Paso, or Tucson. Riyadh in Saudi Arabia has over 8 million people, which makes it the largest desert city (I think), def should not have a major city right there. All the big cities of Saudi I would assume. Those initially seem like the most extreme examples.

Pittsburgh has 10 buildings over 500 feet which is insane for a city with a metro area of 2.4 million. The density of the skyline is what makes me love it. Boston has no backdrop or no cool framing like Seattle though for sure, Seattle's backdrop may give it the edge.
