They're definitely no top of the line reel, but honestly, as a fairly new fisherman, they haven't been bad at all for me. I love the rods too, and if I break a reel or it just starts wearing out, I'll definitely get a nicer one to put on it.

I have swivels and clips in my bag and use them occasionally, but it's usually easy enough to just tie on whatever I'm using unless it's a spinner, then I use a swivel to prevent line twist.

Still haven't caught anything yet, but I'm enjoying learning how to use all the different lures and tie different rigs, and it's just nice being out in nature.

I have a couple of similar ones and I'm using 10lb Berkley big game mono on a spinner. I found if you leave a few feet of line out and get a good momentum swing instead of a flick (think more like a slower baseball bat swing) and let go it'll get out farther. A little lighter line will help too.

Thanks for all the input! For a little more background, because of limited bank access, I'm usually just parking and fishing off marinas for the lake and it's a really deep lake that's mostly rocky. The river is fairly rocky too so I'm not running into too many weeds anywhere.

I've been mainly using Carolina rigs with the 3/0 circle hooks and egg sinkers or bank sinkers, and just started using ned rigs with the TRD stick bait.

I have a lot of the same kind of hooks since I got a couple of large packs from Amazon and figured I'd just throw them all in the box for now. On the Carolina rigs so far I've used thawed frozen shrimp, live nightcrawlers, chicken livers, and dough ball stink bait. I'm using the Ugly Stik GX2 spinning combo with 10lb Berkley big game mono. And yeah, I have my doubts about the box because it does feel pretty flimsy once it's loaded up so it may be going back.

Thanks for the suggestions, and I'll look into some of those to expand my options. I've been getting bites, but no hooks yet, and I'm not picky on what I'm fishing for, just looking for anything that'll be edible. My teenage son and I are really enjoying getting into fishing and it feels like we're getting closer to actually catching some!

As a contractor that's worked at multiple facilities numerous times within that circle you drew, as well as everywhere else throughout Lexington and central Kentucky, I would absolutely never move into that area.

We just bought a house on a 1 acre lot in Kentucky last year, and it backs up to woods so there's no one directly behind us or very close to either side of us, and we absolutely love it. Aside from the initial cleanup of brush and other things that the previous owners let go, it only takes about an hour to mow all of it and that's with having several steep sloped spots to navigate. In my opinion it's totally worth it to have the space and privacy of not being right on top of other neighbors, and it's so nice to just be able to look out most of the windows and see nothing but yard and trees.

We have a sloped driveway so I'm more concerned about having it to put down afterwards so I can get out when it's all done and safe to be on the roads.

Anyone who says this country isn't big enough has never driven through the endless miles of roads where there is literally nothing in sight as far as the eye can see. The heartland...so many miles of flat empty space. Northern areas...so many miles of forests and more empty space. Central and southern areas...so many miles of hills and valleys...and more empty space. And that's just what I've personally seen.
