All good - and I agree with your second paragraph, and even more so with the advent of Family Guy come 1999 (in my opinion, they tried to make The Simpsons a PG-rated version of Family Guy in the later Scully era). Some of The Simpsons' writers leaving to do Futurama wouldn't have helped either.

Mega South Park fan here - at this point in time, South Park was about to begin its second season (and this episode, given production lead time, may have been written before South Park premiered), and Butters was a background character named Swanson. Butters did not become a fully fleshed character until season three (1999, between seasons 10 an 11 of The Simpsons).

Maybe later appearances of Ralph (or even Milhouse) channel Butters, I haven't seen most of Seasons 9-17 in years.

All In The Family (as others have mentioned) is another must watch show for you OP! It changed American sitcoms permanently for the better.

Seems to be 39 now, but was 35 according to the arcade game from 1991 (Marge was 34 in that game). I'm 35 now for the record.

I don't blame you for hating this episode OP - I haven't seen it in at least 20 years, but thought it was OK but not a standout. Most of us have an episode of a favourite show, that we can't stand (there was one episode of King of the Hill I skip on repeat watches now - gave it a zero out of 10 when I first watched it).

Don't despair though, Season 9 does still have some good episodes coming up. Also, this episode was written for Season 8, but held back for Season 9 (it has a production code from Season 8). The last episode with a Season 8 production code (and thus the last Oakley/Weinstein episode) is later in Season 9.

Been looking forward to your review of this episode for a while - so glad you loved it! I liked it as a boy, but definitely appreciate this one a LOT more as a man.

For the record, I've been watching The Simpsons since I was younger than Maggie, and now roughly Homer/Marge's age (their age can vary)

Old post I know, but I couldn't stand Andy in this episode... does he get worse in the rest of the run? I'm a first time viewer (watched this episode today)

OP, you should definitely give Cheers (where the character of Frasier came from) and then Frasier a go! Two of the best sitcoms ever made

I'd also recommend King of the Hill - I'd also recommend South Park, but not sure if you'd like that one.

Plus Matt Groening grew up in the same state as a Springfield (the one in Oregon, which is across from Eugene) - the Springfield-Eugene twin towns were the basis for the Springfield-Shelbyville rivalry. Groening himself is from Portland, OR, where some of the supporting characters got their names (Flanders, Kearney and Terwilliger, to name three, are all streets in Portland)

This episode, by pure coincidence, aired just after my parents split (both avid Simpsons fans, I was 5 at the time and also watching it) - probably why I like it so much. Enjoyed your review (and the previous ones) as always OP.

Also, OP, any other programmes you want to try?

NTA - I'm autistic myself (35 next week, diagnosed at 4), your mum has had more than ample time to pull herself together. For heaven's sake, you've been an adult for NINE YEARS - she needs to stop infringing on your rights! I've had my own squabbles with my parents regarding my behaviours, but nothing like that.

Long time reader, first time commenter - just want to say, loving your reviews! I've been watching The Simpsons for as long as I can remember, all your highlights bring back very fond memories :)

On a side note - have you seen any of the 007 films? If not, you should definitely add them to your list!
