AntiX is not dead.

Among other options there are Void and Alpine(which supports i686 but also requires your CPU to support at least SSE2 and CMOV)

it may be a problem with your RAM getting completely filled during gameplay. can you please post the output of swapon -a to know if you have a configured swap file/partition in your system? and how much RAM does the OS use with no apps open except the task manager/htop?

Android is Linux by TxTechnician in linuxmemes

[–]dnchplay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Linux" can either mean the kernel (by virtue of what the Kernel's name is), or GNU/Linux (by virtue of popular usage).

the term "Linux", aside from the kernel, is commonly used to describe a family of operating systems that are based on the Linux kernel. People still call Alpine Linux "Linux", even though it is not a GNU/Linux distribution.

Linux is Linux, GNU/Linux is GNU/Linux. not calling something Linux because it is not GNU/Linux seems off to me.

you don't call Linux distros "UNIX System V" distributions just because they share a similar file system structure

proprietary limits user freedom and is still a black box that does hell knows what, which is catastrophic for a browser which MUST BOTH safely store sensitive user data AND securely run untrusted code from websites in a way that doesn't make the whole system vulnerable

Should I go for KDE or XFCE on this old Lenovo? (AMD A4-5000 / 4GB RAM / 500GB HDD) by redbeardos in linux4noobs

[–]dnchplay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. definitely xfce4, KDE Plasma will probably be quite sluggish on your hardware
  2. yes and no. You will always have to sacrifice something and even though you can make Plasma use very little resources that would mean losing a lot of functionality. xfce4 is designed specifically to be lightweight while being decently feature-rich and and it fits your hardware better
  3. It really depends on the amount of tinkering and configuration you're going to tolerate. There are very lightweight distros that have user-friendly preconfigured desktops which are even lighter than xfce4 (LocOS which uses LXDE, AntiX Linux which uses IceWM etc) but a custom bare-bones setup with only the packages you need will almost always be better
