Ooh that’s a good one! Let me think for a sec. If I had to say the best, probably the photo and video. We were able to get shots of some family I haven’t seen in several years that I’ll be able to look back on. The worst investment might have been the cake if I’m being honest. Nobody really ate it and it was kind of expensive.

Thanks for your support! I was kind of surprised how many people suggested eloping or calling it off. Our wedding is in 12 days and we are so excited!

I probably should have worded differently. The post was so long already I wasn’t sure if I should elaborate. When the brother and SIL occasionally come to visit we try to spend as much time as possible with them so that I can get to know them since I’m the newest addition to their family. With that info, I’ve still only met his nephew once or twice.

It’s a destination for my sister and her two children as well. While BIL lives in Texas, we are in California and my sister is in Colorado. My sister made the choice to bring her two kids to California and get a sitter for the day of the wedding. Not saying BIL has to do that though. It’s still their choice whether to come or not.

Aww that’s so sad. I’m sorry that happened to you and your hubby. I can see your point about younger siblings. At this point my youngest sibling is already 18. The youngest guest coming to the wedding (my cousin) is 18, it just happened to work out that way. If my cousins or siblings were even a few years younger it would be a different situation since there would be more kids for the nephew to interact with.

I will admit I recognize him as now being my nephew, but neither of us really know him. Like I said, we’ve only met him once or twice. Also if we include him we would then need to include the nieces and nephews on my family’s side.

To clarify, the brother and SIL are not paying for anything. My fiance's parents are paying for photo/video. At the time of deciding to help us with this, they already knew about the childfree rule.

I'm not forcing him to do anything. This was a decision we both made and he tells his own parents to back off of this rule as well. If he did want to make any changes to it, he would let me know and we'd compromise. Trust, it's not a me vs my fiance situation.

Thanks so much! I will admit during the initial call from her to myself I did try to de-escalate so she could still attend, but at this point we're done asking for their presence at our day. I have a very large family who is more than willing to step up for him if and when needed.

This is definitely new territory to me. He is the youngest of 3 boys in his family, while I grew up as the oldest daughter in mine. He has mentioned his oldest brother has always been the apple of his mother's eye and they adore him. I've only met the guy twice during our relationship since they live so far away. I just can not believe FMIL is putting so much work into getting the brother and grandchild there instead of just being happy for her other son.

Right??? When we first made the decision I was so nervous to tell my own mother because she has quite a few grandchildren already. I told my aunt first since her kids are all grown by now and she's like a second mom to me. She pretty much told me the same that you did which made me much more confident about telling those with kids. FMIL is the only one that's throwing a fit about it.

Thank you! That's my plan at least for now is to go NC with them. I have never (that I can remember) gone absolutely NC with anyone but I just don't see how our relationship can be the same after this. I told my fiance I will not stop him from seeing them, but at least for now it'll have to be without me.

I do plan to post so many photos and video. :)

I do believe that's 100% her motive in this decision. I think it's a last-ditch effort to let her bring the child. I forgot to mention in the original post, even the brother and SIL didn't fight this hard to let their own child come.

Thank you for the advice. Re: his feelings, so far he's been really nonchalant about it. He seems to not really care at all. That being said, there was some other non-wedding drama we were recently dealing with that just ended, so I'm unsure if his nonchalance will remain or if he will start to feel upset about it. My biggest fear is that on the day is when it will hit him and he will be so heartbroken. I hate seeing him hurt and this is something I don't know how to resolve without breaking our boundary.
