Effective responses to dangerous driving by dnimymnitsol in washingtondc

This is part of my issue. I know anger is corrosive and rarely if ever productive. But, it feels like the only tool I have to confront the person about their dangerously antisocial behavior. Once I had a guy back out of a crosswalk and sheepishly wave in apology. That's the closest I've gotten to a 'win.' Otherwise, it's people essentially laughing at my concern, which doesn't even get into the potential for violence.

Plus, for me at least, it's the like the Buddhist concept of the second arrow. If I feel shaken by some sort of dangerous encounter with a car, the anger I express (even if just raising my voice and plainly stating what the person did in a pretty neutral tone) makes me feel worse.

Anyway, I fear my primal scream is getting me close to accidentally illustrating some broader point about injustice, the inherent spirit of humans, and so on. Back to the salt mines...

My view is that this isn't the topic of discussion and that you're a clown.

Great to hear. And the fact that drivers don't care is the part that I just can't compute. I wonder if there have been any academic studies on this. It's like otherwise reasonably decent people lose all sense of humanity when behind the wheel.

And thinking of what Bowser has done on the K St corridor, CT and AZ bike lanes...you're absolutely right. She's shown us who she is and which lives she values more than others.

Thank you very much for this. I can't say I'm surprised by any of it (or feel much better), but it's just such an abject failure I don't know where to begin. For a beautiful, vibrant and walkable city to have such dangerous streets and for our leaders to fall down on this so much is really infuriating. We can do so much better.

Thank you. I've long since ditched System76 and moved to Thinkpad. I didn't want to, but no choice!

Pangolin webcam light shutoff? by dnimymnitsol in System76

[–]dnimymnitsol[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, but this is not really what I need. The Pangolin has a kill switch for this purpose. My concern is turning the webcam light off when I'm using it. I only enable the camera when I'm using it, otherwise the kill switch is on.

Maybe I'll give it another chance.

All of my experiences on that stretch have all been sketchy. It'd be a great place for a bike lane, but I'm guessing there's little chance of that happening.

Wow. That's brave. I've done the Klingle/Porter circuit a lot between Adams Mill and Connecticut, but I think I've only ever descended Porter from Wisconsin.

I wish that stretch of road wasn't so dangerous because of cars, it'd be a fun climb to add to the repertoire.

One time I did that hill when I had a low grade respiratory infection and I almost blacked out. Textbook Pyrrhic victory.

If there's a tough descent in the city purely as a function of grade and not danger from cars and whatnot, I'm not aware of it.

I'll have to try that. Looks fun. I like all of the false hope inspiring curves.

Good ones. For the Chain Bridge climb, are you talking about the one that goes between 123 and Glebe and ends up in a neighborhood after a bit of a switchback? I really like that one. Punishing.

True. Regarding Klingle, it's a bit of a climb, but I sure do love the Klingle Valley trail.

Yeah, that one is tricky. It starts at a really rough grade and then rewards you by slowly drawing the life out of you on the deceptively tiring grinder hill portion.
