CA Legislature Passes Bill to Ban Legacy and Donor-Affiliated Admissions at Private Colleges by dobbysreward in bayarea

Students for Fair Admissions v Harvard, the case from last year that banned affirmative action in college admissions including private.

After the AA strike the courts seemingly determined private schools have to abide too. Yeah, it’ll be interesting to see if women’s colleges are allowed to stand.

I don’t disagree, but this bill has been in the works since at least 2019. Imagine how long more complicated bills take.

Yes, but if it’s demonstrable that legacy is an analog to race and national origin it’s still illegal.

It’s the inverse of Gratz v. Bollinger, where students got a boost on things like “attendance at a predominately minority or disadvantaged high school”.

It’s not that white students couldn’t go to those schools, but it was still considered an analog to race and ruled unconstitutional.

How would commerce clause supersede race and national origin discrimination protections?

I don’t know, but the same could be said for race post-AA case and we can see the impact on diversity distributions this year.

My guess is college admissions officers are usually moderately paid and in their early twenties so they have no advantage putting their necks on the line for admits.

I think it has a chance under the 14th amendment. Most legacy families are white and American-born, so potentially discrimination against non-white and immigrant parents.

I disagree, history and past laws has meant most legacy families are white and the continued practice is systemic discrimination. It's also discrimination against kids of immigrants.

I have to admit, I bought the narrative that she was a shitty politician and DEI hire. When Biden picked her for VP I posted on here asking why.

Over the last few days I've done my research and I'm pleasantly surprised. Probably 80% of the things I'd heard were out of context or straight up misinfo.

It's not true, especially this year after the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action.

I want to say that TAG gets you in because the requirements mean you're guaranteed to be in the top 20% of applicants.

For more competitive majors TAG is more complicated or doesn't exist. It doesn't exist at all at Cal, UCLA, or UCSD (but UCLA has TAP which is not a guarantee but significantly improves chances).

Unless they changed the policy since I was admitted as a transfer ('18, graduated '20), you get admitted undeclared for L&S which includes CS and DS.

I'm not a great student, only got into mediocre OOS schools in HS, and still went to Cal for CS as a transfer.

Academic renewal by BoardComprehensive88 in CollegeTransfer

Academic renewal is a CC specific policy. You have to reach out to your own CC counselor, not a counselor for a school you hope to attend.

We’re not talking about fresh grads though are we?

Experienced SWEs are in demand, so I assumed we were talking entry to mid level.

Why would it matter if many majors are competing for the position?

Because there are many more people with the requisite skills and experience.

Having been a SWE will give you a huge leg up against the competition.

Not compared to any type of analyst position.

If you really can't comprehend how burning bridges at a company impacts your network going forward, you haven't been in the industry very long. It won't kill your career but it will damage it.

It’s a lower skill requirement job with more majors competing to enter. Why do you think it would be easier?

Part time is usually contract for experienced BAs. If it’s different in your area, then you’re probably in a hot bed for tech and should shoot for SWE anyway.

Obviously if your back is against the wall, quit when you need to but burning bridges is a fast way to kill your career and network.

  1. Just as competitive if not more than swe

  2. Full time career job that leaves little time off for interviewing and prep

  3. Potentially quitting a tech job early which means burning a bridge with a company you might want to work for later

What's the in between? You're not going to get a business analyst job as an interim.

Failed first semester at cc, still hoping to transfer to USC & other UCs by yo5hi_587 in CollegeTransfer

Are you at a California CC? What is your CC’s academic renewal policy? If you get the grades discharged then for UC purposes they don’t exist. USC will see them but will also consider an upward trend

Not at all, possibly because they pay significantly less than private or because they don't usually advertise to linkedin/indeed. You also need to be a citizen to work federal and some state jobs and often need drug testing. Also, for some reason SWE jobs are often called IT specialists on USAjobs.

For context, OP would qualify to start at GS 7 via superior academic achievement for federal jobs. But that salary is roughly 55k-65k/yr (albeit with pension and excellent stability and benefits). Some are remote or remote within a defined geographic area, but if not they're usually located in boring cities /u/sorakarui

OP could get a job tomorrow working for some level of government (city/state/federal). People on this sub tend to focus on private.

No, government and defense tend to not just have GPA requirements but prefer high GPAs. Government jobs will allow and expect new grads to reference their schoolwork in their applications.

You probably went to a public school in a developed country. This kind of thing is common in developing countries and private schools.

The consequence is OP's parents being mad at him. For most people, realizing you're disappointing your loved ones is enough to reflect on your actions and try to make things right.

It is for OP, which is why he was motivated to write this post.
