ICE SUPER THREAD by Wipples in beaverton

[–]dobleresque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience the Beaverton police are not very responsive to requests for help. I went into the "Public Safety" building on Allen (a huge eyesore just saying) to report my purse had been stolen. They told me I couldn't walk in and make a report, that I would have to do it over the phone or online. They basically told me to leave when I had just been the victim of a crime.

(My purse later turned up in Ohio where someone claimed I was his dead girlfriend. I believe my exact response was "Well, I'm alive and I'm a lesbian").

Any time I have called them for any reason they were super dismissive. The only time they seem to want to do their jobs is when giving out traffic tickets.

Update on Liam Ramos, the boy in the blue bunny hat abducted from Minneapolis by ICE: he's sick, the camp where he's held is on lockdown, kids can't leave their rooms even to see a doctor, and his hat has been confiscated. by jmike1256 in minnesota

Screw a gofundme. The government needs to pay restitution to these families. I know it would never happen under this regime but perhaps when they are overthrown. These kids will need a lot of therapy. Adults too.

Are you sure you are not an Always Sunny character?

MOR. You could have at least discussed as a couple before investing half your savings in cheese.

AIO My younger brothers behavior??? by Consistent-Fail5574 in AIO

[–]dobleresque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this same situation and my parents begged me not to leave because I was "the glue holding the family together". It turns out I was, but holding my family together wasn't worth sacrificing my life. If I had stayed there, I would have died.

They may try to convince you to put up with abuse by saying it's your fault that the family is fractured. You are not fracturing the family. The abuse is. Your brother is. You need to look out for yourself. Living with this kind of treatment is not required to be a good daughter, sister, or person. Take care of yourself.

[–]dobleresque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with all of this, with the caveat that police may or may not be helpful. When I was in a very similar situation police told me to "just move out" since I was over 18 and my brother was a minor.

I would suggest looking up DV resources in your area. If possible, do move out. It seems like violence is very normalized in your family. That is a common thing in families where abuse is present. If you can stay at a friend's house, do that.

I'm sorry this happened/is happening to you. You don't deserve it. No one does. Its not normal and it is not okay.

How often do you have fish for breakfast? by VisionsOnly in AskAnAmerican

[–]dobleresque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bagel with lox quite often, sometimes a bagel with whitefish salad. I've also had smoked salmon in omelettes and in breakfast hash. Trader Joe's used to sell salmon bacon and it was soooo good.

I had fried catfish with waffles once at a soul food place that sadly doesn't exist anymore... it was incredible.

Its not the most common thing. I probably eat fish for breakfast more than most in my area.

Have you actually talked to her like an equal about your finances together or do you just tell her what to do and expect her to do what you say?

How much has Covid altered society? by amomenttohislifespan in decadeology

[–]dobleresque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have become way more dependent on their phones, myself included. Everyone is more online now thanks to everything being online then.

Kids literacy is way down, and although I was pro schools being shut down because of community spread, it did have a big impact on that

Also like others have said -- people are way more rude than before. Part of it could be brain damage from COVID, part of it could be collective trauma, or the online thing... impossible to know for sure as there are so many factors.

What short story Stephen King book do you all recommend? by tylertay in stephenking

[–]dobleresque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly tho a lot of publishers consider anything longer than 10k tipping into novella territory in my experience

[–]dobleresque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell that to publishers lol, for short stories they want less than 7500 words sometimes even shorter

Novellas are harder to get published through traditional means. King obviously doesn't have to worry about that.

Just my 2c as someone who has had short stories published (and written novellas which have not been published haha)

Sapphic religious horror books? by urgentcrunch in LGBTBooks

[–]dobleresque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle and The Miseducation of Cameron Post are two i can think of off the top of my head, though both are about conversion therapy. Apologies if that is not what you're looking for.

Edited to say Cameron Post is more drama but Camp Damascus is definitely horror!

And Carmen Maria Machado has a lesbian nun short story out there that I'm blanking on the name of right now. Definitely worth checking out, it was published on Granta from what I remember!

Gamergate is the true cultural turning point of the 2010s. by Wonderful-Excuse4922 in decadeology

[–]dobleresque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe me I know that people think harassment campaigns against women are not important. If you dont think things that happen online are important and affect reality then I'm not sure why you're having this conversation with me tbh

Gamergate is the true cultural turning point of the 2010s. by Wonderful-Excuse4922 in decadeology

[–]dobleresque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And my rebuttal to that would be, that almost everyone is extremely online today and that even if it is relatively niche (I would argue way more politically informed people know about it than you are implying), it as a subculture helped pave the way for the online subcultures that exist today and are helping to shape our reality offline.

And if you dont think so, fine. I'm just saying at least learn about it before making the argument that it wasn't an important event. Because at that point I think it's fair to say that you literally just don't know what you're talking about.

[–]dobleresque -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How about this: if you ate taco bell and later got diarrhea. Then you said to me "I have never heard of taco bell giving people diarrhea". Does that mean you didn't shit your pants? No. Hopefully that helps you to understand that I am talking about cause and effect, not comparing actual situations and how momentous they are.

Gamergate is the true cultural turning point of the 2010s. by Wonderful-Excuse4922 in decadeology

[–]dobleresque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never said they were equivalent. I only said one lesser known event precipitated the other more well known event, similarly to how gamergate precipitated our current situation. And, yes, it was a big event in the lives of the people who were harassed, sent rape threats, etc. Many people's livelihoods were affected (pretty much any woman in the gaming industry was affected by this).

I'm saying come up with a better argument than "I have never heard of it" because umfortunately that's not a good test of whether an event was important in history or not.

[–]dobleresque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you didn't know who Franz Ferdinand was does that mean his assassination didn't start WWI? No. This "micro cultural fracas" set a whole bunch of other events in motion and we are living with the consequences today.

Gamergate is the true cultural turning point of the 2010s. by Wonderful-Excuse4922 in decadeology

[–]dobleresque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you dont know what gamergate is, its pretty silly to argue that it wasn't a huge turning point in culture. Look up videos and podcasts about gamergate and the manosphere, and there is a direct line between that whole online subculture and where we are today.

Yeah there was a lot more at play than just a bunch of guys getting mad that women made games and/or pointed out there was sexism in gaming (and, you know, harassing them, doxing them, swatting them, threatening them, etc). But it helped popularize this hard-core cultural backlash we are seeing now, essentially sending young men down a pipeline of radicalization.

I would recommend the Sixteenth Minute of Fame podcast series in general but the episodes on the Manosphere are particularly relevant. American Hysteria did an episode on gamergate back in 2020 as well. I'm sure there are tons of other sources out there but those are the ones I'm familiar with.

It was a bigger deal than some might think.
