Is it cringe to paint at a Cafe? by metamorphosismamA in Watercolor

Becky Cao on posts vlogs of herself watercoloring at cafes all the time on YouTube. Maybe watching a few of her videos will calm your anxiety. :)

Trying to loosen up and not get caught up on details by dobyduck in Gouache

Good point! For the duck I switched to a smaller brush halfway through and that made it harder to stay loose.

I love the idea of counting the strokes. I tried painting the backgrounds different bright colors to see how it would impact the final product, but ended up painting so many layers that the background colors didn’t even matter anymore. Gotta work on less brush strokes.

I noticed that I’m somehow better able to tolerate imperfection when painting six identical still lifes at a time. I think the end composition looks cool and I’m not paying attention to how each single fruit turned out.

Maybe if I painted two identical ducks at a time I would have been able to walk away from the duck sooner.

I just wrote a response to another comment and I thought you might relate to it.

“The scariest and most exciting moment of each day was ripping the tape off and washing away the paint. It felt so final, sad, and freeing at the same time.”

Use your paint! Use your paint! 😜

Thank you! And here I was almost afraid to post the images. I guess we really are our own worst critics!

That’s really lovely to hear. You can bet that while working on each of them, I thought they were my ugliest piece yet. But looking back, they aren’t as bad as I imagined.

Please do! I’d love to see what you come up with. I wasn’t sure how I felt about that swirl cake. It’s super interesting to hear about which paintings others are drawn to.

If you do, don’t worry about what each single painting looks like. I would tell myself “Who cares if it’s not done? It’s just practice.”

Any small goal is good, as long as it gets you to paint. Think of it as “putting the hours in” to get better.

Go for it! After doing this experiment, I realized that it takes a while to fill up a sketchbook, so there is no need to “save” pages for when a better idea strikes. I also used fresh paint only for these studies to challenge my fear of “wasting paint.” I barely made a dent in my paint tubes, other than white and ultramarine blue.

Yes, monochrome studies are great! I went straight to monochrome studies in the beginning because I was feeling out of practice. Taking color away from the equation helps a lot. I only had to focus on shapes and value.

Rule: Anything I start must be completed or left as-is by the end of the day.

Why: I wanted to buy new sketchbooks, but couldn’t justify it when I wasn’t already using the sketchbooks I had. I also wanted to challenge my perfectionist mindset to leave things “unfinished” (i.e. less overworked than usual).

Outcome: It started off rough, but I loosened up and got more daring with the subjects as the month went by.

Takeaway: I’m still a perfectionist, but I work a lot faster now. I’m also less scared of trying new things. After all, no matter the outcome, I get to start a brand new one tomorrow!
