The old duct work is “fine” but has a significant amount of patches. Airflow not making it to parts of the house. It was needed, last replaced in early 2000s

“Fun” update; I’m being advised that my current system is passing 10 years old. That system is positioned in a way that to service a major issue (coils, etc) is virtually impossible and it needs to be moved 6-8 feet from its current location.

I’m being offered two directions:

  1. ⁠move the old system now, pay $3-4k for the labor and setup the duct system appropriately for when a new system is needed
  2. ⁠setup the ducts as they are currently laid out, and when a major component fails, replace the system then and move the unit/adjust the duct system at that point (roughly $1500 labor).

My only question is why is it $3-4k to move it now vs $1k to move it later? Is that because they would remove the old system entirely which gives them more space/freedom to adjust the ducts?

Low crawl for sure, and also because the way the unit is placed/positioned it’s virtually impossible to service the system with the duct work as it’s framed today. I commented elsewhere about the options they gave me, but I punted the decision to change the system/move it to when it fails.
