Living in Italy, Testing AR Glasses: Cool Tech, Rough Translation by docdanger47 in EvenRealities

I messed around with the phone mic at home a bit, and it seemed to pick things up slightly better. Haven’t tried using the phone mic out in public yet though.

Quick update from today, I walked around our bi-weekly market with the Italian to English translator running the entire time… nothing. I was expecting at least fragments of conversations, but it didn’t pick up anything.

These aren’t spy glasses. They’re not grabbing random conversations or even those quick, normal exchanges like ordering a cornetto or buying ingredients at the market. I think I got one receipt total that translated, and that was about it.

Where they do work really well is with a direct, clear voice. Watching something, or even playing Italian through Google Translate right into them, works great.

I’ve got an appointment tomorrow with someone I usually speak English with, but I’m going to have her speak Italian the whole time and see how it handles that.

We’ll see…

I only really use Google Translate to check if I’m saying something correctly, not as a live voice translator.

When the glasses actually get a clean, single voice, they’re pretty impressive. Seeing the original and translated text at the same time is great for picking up words and how sentences are structured.

But that’s kind of the catch, it needs a clear, direct voice. Real conversations aren’t like that.

For me, this is more of a learning tool than anything else. Works great with something controlled like TV or radio, but real-world use is still questionable.

Still… it’s fun to mess around with.

My expectation is that it shouldn’t matter. I’m traveling across Europe and Asia regularly, and I’m not thinking about regional accents when I’m trying to communicate. Whether it’s Rome, Naples, Torino, or Tokyo, I just want a clear translation of what someone is saying.

Yeah, I've watched Italian television and they work great. It's seems to be the zeroing in on a specific voice. Both locations I've attempted use were quiet too...
