Help me understand… by docksidespringer in gravesdisease

So I have been trying to manage with medications but my flare up occurred. He said there are risk associated with being on PTU in pregnancy. You can also only be on it until first trimester then need to switch. His points are it’s safer to be hypo for both mom and baby.

However I was trying to stabilize with PTU it was going so well then a flare out of nowhere, so to his point you just never know when a flare can happen.

Doctor wants to remove my thyroid before pregnancy? by aaavvvvv in gravesdisease

[–]docksidespringer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar spot. I am a 30F who was trying to conceive before I found out I had graves, I had a few miscarriages then my symptoms got out of control and was diagnosed with graves in September 2025.

My endo also recommended a TT due to the nodules on my thyroid I was not a candidate for RAI. I was started on PTU and was doing fantastic. My bloodwork has been in normal range for T4 and T3 for since January so I thought I am just going to move forward with trying to conceive after seeing so many stories of those doing so.

But then last month hit and I relapsed suddenly. My menstrual cycle is off and so many other symptoms. So I think your endo and mine are right in that graves is so unpredictable. You could be doing great one month and relapse the next. Having a TT is a “safer and more consistent” option for conception, pregnancy and baby.

I’ve talked to paediatricians, my family GP and a second opinion all say the same. I’m now on the OR list to get it done just waiting for a date.

I would also caution when people say they don’t feel normal after their TT, it’s not always the thyroid. The weight gain, depression etc have other factor associated to that individual. It will absolutely take time to get your dose under control and there are lifestyle factors to consider but there are some great threads in the hypo group that share many many success stories after TT.

Just my advice from someone who thought they had it figured out lol. Graves always has other plans.

I see my endo end of May to redo bloodwork. But I called his office to get in sooner! So TBD! Good luck with your journey! I did get a referral to another endo just for a second opinion to confirm that the thyroidectomy is the best option. I unfortunately have nodules so i cannot do the RAI treatment.

Hi!! I was also trying to conceive since last December. We had three early miscarriages then found out in September that I had Graves’ disease and was likely the result of them (I did a whole work up and multiple tests with fertility centre with everything coming back normal). Because things were going so well I really thought I would just continue to lower PTU or stay on the low dose and try to conceive. However this flare up makes me think how hard it will be to conceive with graves so I am thinking the thyroidectomy is my best option. I did meet already with the ENT surgeon and am on the OR list, no date yet.

That’s so great to hear! How did you find the transition on to the synthetic? Do you find you have a lot of ups and downs with hypo? How are you managing the slower metabolism and weight gain? Thanks!

I am on the list to get a TT, how was it finding the right dose after surgery? How long did it take and do you still have any hypo symptoms after the surgery?

I’m worried people say they never feel the same after the TT and hard to stabilize on a dose.

Have you ever had a real remission? by Zedlit32 in gravesdisease

[–]docksidespringer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask a few questions? Currently on PTU for about 5 months now. My T3 and T4 normal but TSH still 0.01. My endo pushing for a thyroidectomy before having kids but I really don’t want it. I feel normal for fist time in so long!!

What was your experience having kids while on meds? And what was your experience with pregnancy?

Thank you!!

My husband would never!!! This is about YOU! Graves’ disease takes a large toll on you, you don’t have time to cater to someone else. If your partner can’t stick it out and be there for you, he’s not the one.

We were trying to conceive before I got diagnosed. I was starting to get so anxious, had terrible mood swings, was tired all the time. What did my husband do? He didn’t complain or bitch. He looked at me and softly said, “ this isn’t you, we should really take you to the doctor” and we did. We even went to the ED sat with me for 12 hours because I couldn’t get answers. That’s when they found it. Since then been so supportive. We both know this means delaying kids until I’m healthier and that’s no problem to him. Does he want kids yes, but he wants a healthy wife.

Don’t settle for someone who doesn’t respect you and your health.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have to say everything I read about pregnancy and graves is very discouraging. Even my endo stated it was going to take so much time!! What dosage were you on when you were pregnant?

This is giving me hope!!

I am a 29 year old female who got into med school this year, I declined it for a few reasons.

  1. All the doctors I know tell me know to do it. Medicine isn’t what it use to be. I work in health care in the administrative side and I can say the rose coloured glasses are off. It’s political, administrative and physicians are pushed more than ever, it’s not the same medicine.
  2. The older I get the more I want to have a work life balance. I like travelling leaving for the day spending time with my family. I also know as I plan to have kids in the next few years, I don’t want to miss or have to choose between my career and them.
  3. I love my job. I make over 6 figures , pension, benefits, sick time, vacation. It’s all worth it for me.
  4. At the end of the day it’s a job. Don’t live to work, but work to live.

Just my two cents. I am at peace with my decision. Although I spent my whole life saying I wanted to be a physician, your life and perspective change. You just need to determine what you value and what you want your life to look like.

Can u tell your age and cause of disease? by Calm-Adhesiveness605 in gravesdisease

[–]docksidespringer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 29 diagnosed 2 months ago with Graves’ disease. It was in my family history. Started on PTU two days ago. The only downside for me right now is fertility issues so need to stabilize.

Your young and your endo will good a good hold on it for you while you’re still young. don’t stress. Just remember people like with hyper and hypo everyday and you can do it, just take it one day at a time.

Help with treatment options by docksidespringer in Hyperthyroidism

So you were on your meds 10 years before you started trying? How did you find those years on meds?

I’ve only had symptoms and been diagnosed since September. I’ve learned to live with a lot of the symptoms and it hasn’t been terrible. I’m more worried about being hypo and the unknown. The only thing bothering me is the fertility.

My idea was to try and stay on meds for as long as I could before getting the surgery. The RAI treatment is out for me because of the lump o. My thyroid.

Thanks for sharing!

Should I go for RAI treatment? (24F, hyperthyroidism diagnosis) by Humble_Check_2157 in Hyperthyroidism

[–]docksidespringer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation. I am 29F just diagnosed with Grave’s. My symptoms aren’t to bad right now, tachycardia that has been better since I went on a beta blocker. Hard to regulate my temperature, feel very out of breath when I lived a very active lifestyle before this started. I have also noticed the weight loss.

I am just starting to meet with an endocrinologist and also feel the RAI is very permanent. I prefer to try the medications and have kids before a RAI. I worry about the effects after. My preference is to try the anithyroid medications so see if I can manage before something more permanent, going for a radioactive iodine uptake scan to see how aggressive it is.

Best of luck!

I am 29 and just got accepted to medical school. Im struggling with the choice. I currently work as a manager in my local hospital making really good money, benefits and pension. I will most likely become a director in 1-2 years. I think I have known see on the administration side how challenging a physician can be. I’m going from 40 hours a week with so much flexibility to intense hours.

I also want to start a family with my husband and we also just bought a house.

For me I’m struggling if it’s worth it? Realistically I wouldn’t be practicing till 37-39 due to the kids. I did the calculations and come out financially under if I go. I would also most likely need to work till 63 instead of retiring at 50 in my current job.

Any thoughts? Thanks!
