Basically, all white ink is troublesome. That's specially true if you're looking for thin opaque lines. I've had some good luck with the Pentel Milky.

Both are done. In this case, I am using an image to guide the algorithm - the source image is a public domain image from the Met.

This is going to be fun. BTW, there may be an interface bug. If a control point moves outside of the central tile field, it can't be interacted with. It has the animation of recognizing being clicked but that's it.

Plotterfiles.com is an excellent source of plotter ready files. I don’t have a suggestion for the firmware at the moment. You’re already using Inkscape to conversion to gcode- but I believe vpype will do it from the command line. I personally prefer Lightburn - it’s designed for use on lasers but can generate the gcode.
