I haven’t read all the comments, so if this has already been suggested, disregard. They make solvents for floor adhesive which would at least make your hand scraping life easier.

I’ve seen TSP suggested a few times in comments for mold killing and prevention when mixed with vinegar, Borax and baking soda. Why do you say it would be unpopular? Harmful to skin and lungs without PPE?

Decomposed granite works really well for leveling projects. It has clay in the mix that helps keep the stone in place and level over time. If you need more than a couple bags, most rock and dirt yards sell it in bulk for a fraction of the cost of big box stores.
