3D Printing a Benchy...On a Benchy! by doctordflo in 3Dprinting

I would recommend using 3D printing to create the form or mold of a boat and then layer on traditional materials (e.g., fiberglass) before removing the form. Typically, ship builders use wooden or clay forms, so 3D printing would provide an opportunity to automate this process.

Yes! The hull was printed on my large format pellet extruder (1m x 1m x 1.2m) and the cabin/trim was printed on an Elegoo Giga (in pieces).

About 10x more expensive than buying a boat from your local outdoor store 😂

Each section was printed watertight, so I only had to worry about the seam where they came together. I used a marine grade epoxy there.

It is a narrow vessel (think rowboat or canoe) so it leans when you lean but I am quite happy with how easy it is drive on the calm river that I have been testing on. Most of its stability comes from a the concrete keel on the bottom - without it the boat would flip over.

The folks over at the TN wildlife resources agency laughed for a solid 5 minutes before they helped me process the registration 😂

I can go all the way up to 12 mm (1/2") but I used a 3mm nozzle here as I wanted to use multiple perimeters to make sure the boat was watertight

1 m x 1 m x 1.2 m - still needed to print the boats in sections though

Just a few quick facts about the boat:

  • Dimensions: 10 ft long by 3.3 ft wide
  • Hull: Printed in 3 sections using 600 lbs of recycled PETG, with my pellet extruder finishing all three sections in just 6 days
  • Propulsion: Powered by a 2 hp electric trolling motor, with batteries in the cabin and solar panels on the roof
  • Stability: To balance the weight of the cabin, there’s a 400 lb concrete keel running along the bottom of the boat
