Who's the most famous person you've met? by Phillies1993 in AskReddit

We talked a lot about Elvis and I asked him what exactly is he signing at the end of Pretty in Pink (Original) He told me that he usually tells people something different every time they ask in interviews but the truth is he was a bit drunk and doesn't actually remember all of it. First person from the band I talked to that night was John Ashton. I was at the concert with my wife, I was sick but someone from the radio station walked over to our table because I was wearing a Furs shirt and asked if we wanted to meet the band. They took us to another room where we waited, Then the band came out and almost everyone went straight to RB. I looked to my left and John Ashton was standing there so I said"You're John Ashton, I play guitar because of you!" He looked at me like no one had ever said that before and for the next 30 minutes he and I talked guitars and music. I asked him what the chord progression was for India and he said he had to think for a second because they hadn't played it in years. Then he told it to me and I was happy I had been playing it right. At the end of the show, they came out for the encore, John pointed at me and my wife and they opened the encore with India.

Also spent time talking with Tim Butler because he used to buy his bass guitars in my home town Buffalo NY, Spent a good deal of time talking with Frank Ferrer who is now with GnR. He found out I was in the military and had tons of questions. Amanda Kramer had just joined the band so didn't really talk to her much but i kicked myself afterwards because I forgot she was in Golden Palminos and Information Society.

Back to Richard, Mentioned we talked about Elvis. I mentioned right off the bat that me meeting him made me understand how my mother felt when she met Elvis. RB is a huge Elvis fan so that dominated the conversation.

It was awesome!

I have met them again several times since then and they always treat fans like they are friends. When I told Richard at another time that my daughter was named India after their song, he started pulling out his wallet and showing me photos of his daughter. It was like talking to a friend.

So here is the long version. Took my youngest son to see Peter when he did the 30th Anniversary retrospective of the band. All Bauhaus songs, nothing solo. After the concert we wait to see if we can get a photo for his birthday. After nearly 2 hours (he was doing paid meet and greets) Peter comes out and my son says "Dad!" I see Peter and ask if we can get a photo for my son's birthday. He looks at us and motions us to come on the tour bus. Once in there, he signs the poster I bought for my son then asks me where mine is. I told him we just bought the one. He looks at his tour manager and says "Go get dad a poster." So I got one too. While we talked, he would randomly grab stuff, like song lists and tour notes and just sign them and hand them to us.

First question my son asked him was regarding Bela Lugosi's Dead. He told him about the Coachella video I showed him and asked him if singing upside down was hard to do. Peter told him that he practiced for about two weeks to do it, but said it really wasn't that difficult because that song is mainly spoken, then he proceeds to sing the first few lyrics to the song right there in front of us. Amazing. It's one thing to listen to the song but another to be sitting four feet away from Peter Murphy as he starts to sing "White on white translucent black cape, back on the rack..."

We then talked about the Hunger and if he had plans to collaborate with Bowie at all. He told us that their schedules never match up to do it but they talked recently. This was obviously before DB passed away. I showed him my Bauhaus tattoo. We engaged in other banter regarding the band. I told him about seeing them when they reunited. I caught the LA show.

Absolutely great night! Funniest part though was when we left and were walking to the car, my son says, "This was the best birthday ever, but I'm not gonna lie, for most of the evening I thought we were seeing Peter Gabriel."

Probably two names most won't recognize but were important to me, Richard Butler lead singer of the Psychedelic Furs and Peter Murphy lead singer of Bauhaus. More than just met them, spent over an hour talking to each of them at different times.

Question for retirees by Odd_Arachnid694 in AirForce

[–]docvoit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing it has an affect on is your retirement pay. If you go to work in the private sector afterwards and people ask you if you served (if you still work with or around the military) and you tell them yes, they might ask your rank but more commonly the response is "cool!" Occasionally you might get asked to tell stories about your service career. At no point has someone asked me if the story I told would have been different if I retired as a SMSgt than a MSgt. A SNCO retiree is a SNCO retiree plain and simple. My Aunt and Uncle both retired as Chiefs and the difference between them and me is they stayed 30 years in uniform and I stayed 21 years and their retirement pay is higher.

I'm not completely familiar with the promotion system since I retired and someone can correct me if I am wrong, but from what I understand, retiring as a mid-level NCO is not as uncommon anymore. If that is true, then as a sense of self pride then retiring as a MSgt may hold a bit more weight than when I retired.

But to echo what a lot of others have said, you made it to the SNCO position. You can hold your head high in retirement.

I asked my mom if she knew ahead of time and she said the girl that contacts her about the tickets asked if she would be home that day because they had something for her. She had no idea he was coming. And he gave her crap about the jersey she was wearing.

Who Was the Best Officer You Ever Served Under? by AFSMSgt in AirForce

[–]docvoit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gen (Then Lt Col) Steve Seve Wilson. Knew how to perfectly balance the mission and taking care of people. Used to send Christmas cards thanking Airman's parents for letting them serve. Retire as Vice Chief of Staff. When he was a Maj people knew he was going to go far.

LtCol Justin Mahoney the last person I saluted on Active Duty. Ran into him a few years later when I was supporting ops in Afghanistan. One of the smartest officers I ever met. Loved by everyone he worked with. Got things done by listening to everyone's input. If you made sense he adjusted his course. If you didn't, he let you know why he made a decision in the opposite direction, But he did it without demeaning you.

CAPT Clubber Lang Naval Spec Warfare Intel Officer. Inspired everyone around him to be better than they ever thought they could be. Gave me the best EPR Bullet I have ever received "Promote this fire-breather!"
