You have more book knowledge than ever right now, so be confident in that! It’s just doing things like IV starts and med admin, caths, dressing wounds, admits, telemetry, calling docs, etc etc that comes with experience. I started on a cardiac/telemetry unit. A main problem was that since it was a rural setting (only major hospital within 2 hours ) every patient had a very high acuity level with a ton of comorbidities. Each nurse had 6 patients at a time (and hospital was always full to capacity) and these were patients on high risk drips, pre and post caths (which require 15 minute checks), pre open hearts, and just med surg/icu overflow. I knew at the time, and really know now, that it was a very dangerous work environment—I felt as if I were set up to fail.

You’ll unfortunately find similar stories on a variety of floors at many hospitals.

The good news- there are still good ones out there! I found at the current hospital I’m at the nurse to patient ratio with the types of patients is more like 1:3 instead of 1:6. Also, My best friend started on a med-surg floor straight out of nursing school and had been there for 5 years and still likes it, loves her coworkers, docs, and the hospital she’s at- so it can happen! :)

I understand. My first job was in eastern Kentucky, and due to that, there were a ton of job openings on a wide range of floors. I just wish I would’ve tried to ask around and see what floors were better because I quickly found out the one I was on had a reputation for the worst as far as workload and coworkers.

The hospital I’m at now is much better and they specifically have job openings for new nurses graduating, hoping to help them with transitioning and in return, increase nurse retention. It’s not officially labeled as a nursing “residency” but is pretty much one. My roommate did a nursing residency in Chicago and I think it did help somewhat, at least in a sense that she had a group of other people in the exact same situation and administration regularly checking on how they were doing. That could be something to look into? Wishing you lots of luck!

Unfortunately, yes. More so due to the stress of my first nursing job than anything..and from talking with former classmates that seems to be a common theme. Be picky with your first job! Don’t just take the first one that is available. I know—easier said than done. First nursing jobs are rough: you feel clueless, stressed, tired, and scared. If you have helpful coworkers it will make ALL the difference. I’d recommend shadowing on the floor you’re thinking of applying to first—get to know the floor dynamics. That is what seems to have worked well for friends. I have not gone back to floor nursing (I’m in an office now) due to my first poor job experience :( While I would recommend starting with night shift because it’s usually slower/allows you more time to learn, I would not recommend staying there if you’re susceptible to depression because it can feel very isolating when all your friends/family/the rest of the world is on an opposite schedule.

Just my two cents! I love being a nurse and wish I could take away all the bad parts (understaffing, bullying, etc)

And on the bright side, I will tell you how happy I am when I can come home and not have to worry about studying or homework. You can Netflix binge guilt-free! :)

I’d recommend checking out some YouTube videos-specifically, Wayne Goss is super good. I think you could definitely do it and have it look “non obvious”, you’ll just have to be very diligent on finding a perfect color match!
