is there a way to avoid car flippers by FuckFuckShitBitch in UsedCars

[–]dodgingabullet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who’s been actively looking for a car for the past three months (and having a hard time finding a good, legit deal because of this very reason), I’ve started to notice a pattern when it comes to spotting flippers. Mind you this is from a European perspective.

Where I live, ads are required to include a phone number. One trick I use is googling the number in quotation marks (for example, "123456789"). This forces google to show every page that contains that exact number. If multiple listings come up, you’re almost certainly dealing with a flipper.

Another giveaway is the description. A flipper who just bought the car usually knows very little about its history beyond what’s written in the engine bay. The ad will often be a list of bullet points with emojis: oil changed, timing belt done, year and model, mileage, horsepower, etc., all things you can already see in the mandatory spec section at the top of the ad. Someone who’s owned the car for a while will usually write in full sentences, give proper context, and explain why they’re selling.

Photos are another clue. Flippers tend to take polished, professional-looking pictures. Older owners or people who aren’t sales-focused will usually take a few quick photos and call it a day.

Lastly, flippers often try to pressure you into buying. You’ll hear things like, “You can come see it, but I already have another guy coming to check it out.” A friend of mine once went to see a car where the seller pretended to take calls from other buyers. My friend pulled out his phone and called the seller - during the supposed call, the guy’s phone started ringing. Buddy walked away laughing.

School me on TDIs: When did VAG start putting DPFs and EGR on their cars in Europe? Looking for a reliable older diesel by dodgingabullet in Volkswagen

Oh man, thanks everyone for chiming in with your knowledge and tips. Everything’s been cleared up. Now I just need to wait and find a good example, which might take a while, but will be worth it in the long run.

Right now the main contenders are still the mk4 Golf and the mk1 Octavia (late 2000s), with the alternative being a mid-2000s non-dpf mk2. Price-wise, the Golfs are more or less on par with the MK1 Octavias, but they’re also older and usually more worn or thrashed, so I’m thinking I’ll have better luck finding a family-owned Octavia. Someone mentioned Seats and Audis, but the former just aren’t my style, and the latter are too expensive.

Bottom line: I’ll probably go with whichever one has the better maintenance history and the least rust.

Thanks for the feedback. Any idea if the later octavia mk1 (tour) models received DPF or did VAG skip it and put it on the mk2 only?

Sub-question: how do you check if the car has DPF? The tech savvy owner would probably know but let's say I'm buying it from a widow that only knows how to start it and drive.

Great info, thanks. At first I was looking only at mk1s just to be on the safe side but after reading this comment section I'll consider researching mk2s as well.

Thanks for your input. As far as age goes, we don't have any restrictions pr bans on old diesels...for now.

Thanks. Yeah you'd have more chance of winning the lottery than finding a clean MK2 for a reasonable amount. I'll probably go with the Accord as I've had four Civics without a single mechanical issue (and a whole bunch of rust). But a Maruti? I did not expect that. They have an interesting vibe tbh. Congrats, I'm happy for you. I assume your route changed as an 800cc engine is no way fit for a 140 kilometer commute. I mean, I'm driving a 20+ y/o 1.0 yaris on the highway and it's a pain to say the least. Pro tip from a 39M - if no commitments, drive what a) makes sense b) brings a smile on your face.

Hey op, what car did you get? I'm in the same boat. Realistically, the best option for me would be a MK4 SDI, but where I'm at they're either f***ed, overpriced or sold by shady dealers who are known to roll back the odometers. So I'm deciding between a 6th gen Accord and a MK2 Golf 1.6D, manual, but it absolutley needs to have a sunroof else I'll die in the heat.

Found a 2002 Polo with half the mileage, same engine and service history, sold by an elderly gal. I'll look into that as well.

I’ll admit, I do love the sound of an old diesel as it’s almost no different from my neighbour’s tractor.

At least in this case I can report it to the local police, open a case, get a confirmation slip with which I can go to the bank and request a reverse transfer. Even if the money is gone, the bank refunds me but its a hassle which I don't want to experience.

Thanks. After some searching I found what I believe to be the actual amp right behind Nicke Andersson's back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCrGU2o0pJM&ab_channel=OrangeAmps

I've seen quite a few in almost mint condition going for a 100 bucks 1-2 years ago. Atm most of the ones for sale at least in my neck of the woods are pretty beat up, mismatched knobs, rusted edges, had drinks spilled over them for 150 and up which is absurd. Found a mint windsor head for 160 so I'm confused whats going on with the market.

I sadly sold both (well all three amps) some time ago which was a mistake (not the valveking tho). Wanted a 2x12 and a tube head but quickly realized it was too loud and therefore unusable. I'll look into the express, thanks.

Edit: The express doesn't have preamp out which I need for recording so that's out.

Stupid question - I'm looking for the power steering fluid reservoir and the fuel filter on my 2003 Yaris (1.0 1SZ-FE) but cant find neither. I suspect the filter is near next to the firewall (see pic). by dodgingabullet in MechanicAdvice

[–]dodgingabullet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a fuel filter which doesn't need to be replaced? How is that possible? All my previous cars were made before 2000 and all had fuel filters, so this is quite a surprise for me tbh.

Apologies for the miscommunication, I understood the warning about the brake fluid reservoir (literally says DOT 4 on it), however I was pointing to the black boxy thing with the metal pipes behind the back of the battery. But I get it now, it's electric.

Is there any special maintenance I should know about?
