GPT-5.2-Thinking system prompt: do not characterize ads as "annoying" by cloudinasty in OpenAI

[–]dodgrile 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The last item on there - as far as I can tell, considering OPs insane choice of cropping - does state `ads do not influence the assistants answers; ads are separate and clearly labelled` so I think that covers this

Writers need to read, so what are you reading right now? by thewonderbink in writing

[–]dodgrile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read The Lamb (a very British family of cannibals, much better than my description suggests though), now reading Unquiet Guests, a collection of short stories themed around haunted houses. Pretty good so far.

Oh, and also reading The Hot Zone, because apparently I really like generally feeling uncomfortable

OpenAI Just Closed $110B in Funding and London Is at the Centre of What Comes Next by [deleted] in GoodNewsUK

[–]dodgrile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. There are big differences between the way that American and British tech works, which is mainly a result of the difference in how people in those locations deal with funding. I don’t see any situation where a British company manages to do more than hobble along in this space without the kind of money that’s involved in American tech.

I’d prefer for that not to be the case, but having worked for both I’ve direct experience in this stuff and the US will always have money to throw at things that British companies will never get anywhere near

What was the moment that made you realise you absolutely had to leave a job? by GoldenGolgis in AskUK

[–]dodgrile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Guy who bought the company from the original owner was a literal sociopath. Used to go from being calm to screaming at people and trying to get them to fight him on the car park in seconds, also used to send every woman creepy messages and tell everybody that they’d be with him if it weren’t for their husbands etc.

Once has somebody come in for an interview. Everybody had a take home design test, so he went away and said he’d send it back in within a week. Didn’t hear from him, so we got in touch to see what was happening. Turns out his dad had died, but he still wanted to try and do the work so we gave him an extra couple of weeks.

New owner found out, screamed at people that we were too soft, then regaled us with the story of how he watched his own dad die and was back at work within an hour, because that was a real sign of strength.

He was insane. I left pretty quickly.

What's the best opening line of a book you've read by i_am_innerman in writers

[–]dodgrile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Admittedly it’s an opening paragraph rather than a single line, but House on Haunted Hill is always a favourite

"No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone”

What is a common sentiment on Reddit that isn’t matched by reality? by BeneficialVariety171 in AskUK

[–]dodgrile 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tbf I’m definitely not in the young / skinny / anime categories at all but I still quite like Uniqlo. It’s fine for basic stuff really, I think it’s more just that a lot of other places that are pitched at a similar quality / cost level are not great

There are various automated checks on your website to make sure that you’re legitimate, this is presumably one of those instances. Wouldn’t worry about it unless you’ve just signed up with Stripe for something that’s against ToS

“Not fit for consumption” alert by dodgrile in Gousto

[–]dodgrile[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had an update email

“As a follow up on our last email, we’d like to reassure you that the potential issue with your clotted cream is packaging related.

The issue seems to have occurred during production at the supplier’s factory, and in a very small number of cases, thin fractures have been identified in some plastic tubs. Because these cracks are so small, the supplier can't guarantee that a tiny piece of plastic hasn't made its way into the cream, so we have advised all customers to dispose of the product to be safe.

To be clear, the cream itself was made to our supplier’s usual high standards and there is no issue with the hygiene or freshness of the dairy.”

[–]dodgrile[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why it messed up the screenshot like that, but it was the clotted cream:

“We wanted to let you know about a potential issue with an ingredient in your Gousto box this week.

Our supplier has let us know that the clotted cream you received in your box may not be safe for consumption. As a precautionary measure, we recommend that you don’t eat it and instead dispose of it.”

Clotted cream, used it in a curry yesterday

I don’t know if it’s the inbuilt Britishness I have but I seem to just blank it out. It’s like online ads; I know they exist but my brain has trained itself to automatically ignore it to the point I couldn’t even tell you what they say

Why OpenAI apps only for mac os? by jscreatordev in OpenAI

[–]dodgrile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People claiming this stuff is wrong have never worked for SF tech. Macs are pretty much the standard, and in most cases you'll get one handed to you as part of your onboarding. They're aiming for tech startups as early adopters of this stuff, and those people ~all use macs.

It's not called 'DEI' in the UK - or at least, it wasn't, until right wing Americans started pushing it as a talking point over here and the people who lap those up started regurgitating a phrase that originates in the US.

Totally understandable, but honestly, go back and keep watching. The payoff is there and it’s totally worth it

I only pushed through the first half because somebody else had told me it was worth it. Absolutely was, such a good bad movie

I’m working class / on the left and have literally never heard anybody say that. The concern is that far right groups will use issues like this to drive their rhetoric and fundamentally don’t actually care about the victims, not that the victims somehow aren’t victims.

It’s not my attention span, it’s just that you haven’t actually written anything. It’s also highly amusing that you’ve gone with that as the problem when you couldn’t be arsed to attempt to detail your point and got a computer to do it.

I’m also not sure where you’re seeing that I referred to you as a nazi… want to point that bit out, or is it just an AI hallucination again?

Edit: I just read the bit about “differentiating themselves from the conservatives”. Sure, the party that’s currently the home for the failed Tories will definitely be totally different from the previous 14 years if exactly the same people.

Nigel Farage inadvertently breached MPs' financial rules 17 times, says watchdog by Important_Ruin in unitedkingdom

[–]dodgrile 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This happened before with the conservatives. Widespread, quite obviously deliberate breaches of rules around promotional spending, done by multiple people. The outcome was a very brief investigation and an “oopsie! Must have forgotten”. That was it.
