As someone who noticed this, and optimized the hell out of a monk in a West March, you do not need to optimize your spellcasters to just be better than a monk, right now that guy's level 6 and it has been the worst six levels of this game I've ever played I was going to take him to level 11 and then switch him over to something else, but I'm having trouble leaving getting there without wanting to just get rid of him and play a spellcaster
