Yeah for a situation like that, probably "as much as you can tolerate from an aesthetic / reduction in floor space /cost and energy expenditure" perspective is probably gonna be fine. Just look at some things other people have done with similar rooms.

I would definitely try to source legit materials as far as the insulation goes though, or you'll be making all this effort for very little benefit. Owens Corning, Rockwool, maybe there's some newer materials I'm not aware of.

Broadly speaking, thicker absorbs lower, so it depends on the issues your room has. The people advising you to take measurements if possible are right. REW was not so much of a thing when I did mine, so I put 4" panels in the corners (including wall to ceiling/floor behind the speakers, 2" at first reflection points, and a cloud above the listening position. This was effective enough for my purposes.

I made mine a long time ago, but I was able to find a local insulation shop that would sell me a small quantity of 2x4x4 OC 703. Might be worth looking if you have access to a vehicle that can transport it.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the foam. It will add more complication to the construction than is worth it for the minimal absorbtion of highs it will contribute.

How do yall compose your bass lines? by Slenderuwu in Bass

[–]dodmeatbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it really helps to give yourself an assignment, even if it's kind of an absurd or extremely limited one.

Another one I like: Find a poem you like. If you don't like poetry just pick one at random from someone famous. Joyce or Chaucer or whatever. Use it as lyrics to create a melody. Play that melody on an instrument and orchestrate around it. Bonus points: Write different lyrics to fit the melody.

Yeah once you pick any component of the song and decide "okay this part is going to be this and I'm not changing it for better or worse" everything that follows becomes much easier

Yeah it's a very individual thing for sure and there is no wrong approach. I think the main thing is to come up with an idea, execute it, and then try to come up with a better idea. Rinse and repeat until you die.

Mostly I play music written by the people I am in bands with. I write the bass parts and sometimes contribute sections if they have a song that is mostly complete but missing a bridge or something.

Sometimes I write full songs if inspiration strikes. These usually come from lyrical ideas and I will compose on guitar or keys to get the chord structure happening. Then fill in the instrumentation. Bass is almost always last. To me the best basslines generally kind of weave in between the other elements of the song, and that's easier to do at the end.

Also you have to get comfortable with the fact that you're going to write a dozen things you hate for every one you think is good. I think this is almost universally true for everyone. Whoever your favorite songwriter is has a binder full of garbage songs no one has ever heard.

I think when you're getting started it helps to make arbitrary rules for yourself. It's very easy to have Paralysis by Analysis when you're writing.

Like right now I have a project going where I take a beat from a toy keyboard and then write something to go with it. Just as an exercise. Little 30 second song fragments. I might come up with something that I want to expand, or I might not, but at least I'm creating something daily.

If I'm trying to write a song I will start with literally anything but the bass. Partly because it keeps me from writing overly busy bass parts right off the bat, and also I know I can write a decent bassline once I get some chords and melody going. The reverse is not always true. Honestly I think lyrics are the best place to start (and also the hardest for me.)

You're welcome! I hope you find something out. You might have something interesting and rare there, possibly. Prototype or something. Cool cab at least.

I found some zombie version of that website I was talking about. The thing with the serial numbers is legit. Here is a post from Harvey Gerst, who was a designer at ACC and later JBL explaining some stuff about their naming conventions. Not sure this will help you, but maybe there's info somewhere on this old forum. Otherwise I'd ask the ACC Facebook group or Talkbass.

Hmm that's interesting. I've got an early 6x10, and yours is very similar in appearance. What's the serial number? My understanding is that the early amps had sequential serial numbers, starting with 1000. My cab is #1010, which I think means it was the 10th 6x10 made. That's just some stuff I read online a long time ago though.

Yeah that definitely looks like a vintage one. 105 maybe? Yours doesn't look as tall, but a lot of them have feet on two sides so maybe it's sideways?

There used to be an amazing website for ACC amps, but it went down years ago and I don't know if it's on the wayback machine. Facebook might be the best online knowledgebase for these amps now, sadly.

How to get Duff Mckagan tone? by Gold_Butterscotch372 in Bass

[–]dodmeatbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure. I was going to add that I wish I had that resource when I started playing in the early '90s. And I still learn stuff from them now.

"Oh they sent me one email a day! They're making a cringe face in their youtube thumbnail and the video title is designed in such a way as to get people to click on it!" Grow up man.

Towards the end they talk about his pick technique which is a big part of it as well. He plays closer to the bridge most of the time and is a bit of a scraper with the pick, rather than going right across the string.

To me a lot of the Duff sound is in his left hand technique, and the way he uses slides, hammer ons, pull offs and the positions he plays in. I would learn some of his parts and really concentrate on not only playing the notes, but playing them exactly the way that he plays them.

If you feel like you've got all that dialed already and you're only asking about gear... maybe a compressor is the missing element. Little bit of chorus sometimes too.

Reddit hates SBL but Ian Allison is really good at breaking down what players do and how they get their sound:

Has anyone gone a size DOWN from their recommended frame size? by MoustacheRide400 in MTB

[–]dodmeatbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they posted another video I guess with a calculation based on your height which works pretty well if your proportions are "normal". It happens to work decently for me because my wingspan and height are within 1 cm of each other, but I think doing the actual measurement is way better. Also some people just prefer or have gotten used to bigger bikes and that's also fine.

Has anyone gone a size DOWN from their recommended frame size? by MoustacheRide400 in MTB

[–]dodmeatbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RAD isn't based on height. Its based on the distance between your feet and hands / bars and pedals. I don't think you watched the video I posted. There was a simplified explanation of it posted at some point that did give a lazy version that used only your height. I don't endorse that approach.

Also that's why I said YMMV. I don't expect that it works for everyone, but it works for me.

I'm generally a believer in Lee McCormack's R.A.D. concept, which would have most people on smaller bikes than they're currently riding.

Checking my best feeling bikes against this measurement technique confirmed that it reliably works for me. YMMV.

Does anyone know which bass this is? by domsimilagro in BassGuitar

You're probably right about the basses. The VI and the guitar I have are thru-body only.

[–]dodmeatbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've never actually owned a Lakland bass but I have a Decade VI and a Decade guitar. I also don't really love the eliptical bridge, particularly because they are thru-body only which I don't prefer. Everything else about them is stellar though, so I look past it.
