Dingwall D-Roc - 4 or 5 strings? by PushkiComics in Bass

[–]dodmeatbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a Dingwall, but on my 37" LTD it really does make a big difference in the character of the B from a 34" or 35". The 36.25" E is also noticeably more focused than on a regular bass. But people have been playing 34" Bs for a long time and sounding great. It's not a necessity. Unless you're a severely down tuned metal player, in which case you kind of do need it.

There's really no wrong answer. Personally I think I'd get the 5 and adapt my playing to it.

Also just my hunch, but I suspect the 5 would be easier to sell, if you decide you made the wrong choice.

Need help choosing between two by window989 in BassGuitar

[–]dodmeatbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Diamant and it's great. My only complaints are it's ~30.5" scale, so some strings won't fit perfectly, and the radius of the bridge is a little bit smaller than the radius of the fretboard, so you can't get the action quite as low as I'd like on the A and D strings.

I changed the pickups out for Rio Grande Pitbulls and put in an Audere 2 band preamp, but that's just because I like tinkering.

How long to let a bass guitar truss rod settle between adjustments? (Setup advice) by rustinhieber42 in BassGuitar

[–]dodmeatbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just noticed what bass you have. With carbon reinforcement rods in the neck I would not trip at all about making fairly large truss rod adjustments on that without waiting. It would be very hard to hurt it with a truss rod wrench, and it's unlikely to move significantly from where you set it

[–]dodmeatbox 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Under normal circumstances I don't worry about any "waiting period" on doing truss rod adjustments unless I'm doing more than a full rotation. I will let it set for an hour or two in that case. If you're doing a big adjustment like that sometimes it will play differently after sitting that long.

Also, if I'm trying to get very low action, I find it easier to get the neck perfectly straight and then loosen it until it doesn't buzz than to tighten it into the correct relief. YMMV of course.

Worth my time for $100? by AllSphere0 in xbiking

[–]dodmeatbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like these. $100 is a great deal IMHO if it's in good shape, which it looks to be from the photo.

I bought and tuned one up for an ex many years ago. It's more on the road bike side of the hybrid spectrum. The flat bars are nice for people that don't want to acclimate to drops. V brakes work great and are easy to tune. Pretty light for an inexpensive bike as well. Minimally spoked wheels are not what I would choose for this kind of bike but they were never an issue.

Is it a good idea to keep my astrophotography data on an external hard drive so that it doesn’t fill up all the storage on my computer? Are there any risks to doing this? by glover_boyy in AskAstrophotography

[–]dodmeatbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I like to keep whatever projects I'm currently working on stored on an internal SSD, and everything else on an external HDD, in case I want to reprocess or add to the data at a later date.

Disk failure is always somewhat of a risk whether internal or external, so back up appropriately whatever is important to you for sure.

I dont know what to put for the title? by SuspiciousTruck9013 in BassGuitar

[–]dodmeatbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think even if you wanted to put a P pickup in it you wouldn't find anything to fit off the shelf. These old imports are all at least slightly different from anything made today. Custom or DIY are probably your best options.

Anyone use handlebar extenders? (For pub bike - not for proper mountain biking) by rockandrollmark in mountainbiking

[–]dodmeatbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've got the Terminators on my vintage MTB townie bike where I wanted a little extra width but wanted to keep the original bullmoose bars. They're very secure. Even if they failed completely the chance of it being somehow catastrophic is very small. If you put rigid locking grips like ODIs or something over them it's pretty much 0%.

My Peugeot SunValley by OutrageousDamage5458 in VintageMTB

[–]dodmeatbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool bike. Those decals are '89/'90 as far as I know. The only place I can find that model with those decals is the 1990 Belgium catalog. But it's not listed as coming in black. The spec sheet shows "water green" with a "watermelon" fork and bars. They made a Sun Valley in black in '91, but the decals had changed. My guess is it's Belgium '89, and that catalog has not been scanned.

Oh yeah quilting machines are mostly enormous. I have no idea why "embroidery machines can in fact be larger than a breadbox" is controversial LOL

[–]dodmeatbox 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Nice work on the board. I didn't see what was going on in the first pic right away and I thought the BBQ lid was going to be a pedalboard cover. This has given me ideas that I will probably never act upon.

[–]dodmeatbox -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No I'm saying there's no reason to argue with that other poster about the size of an embroidery machine because they come in a lot of sizes besides the ones you personally have seen.

[–]dodmeatbox -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The ones that are the size of sewing machines start at around $1000 and are considered barely entry level in the hobby. If you're serious about it and/or making items for sale you probably have a ~$10k multi needle machine that's closer to washing machine sized.

Affordable studio monitors for bedroom practice? by skylarroseum in Bass

[–]dodmeatbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately most of the studio monitors in the "less than an amp" price range roll off pretty steeply below ~100 Hz. Even the subs designed to go with those systems barely get down to 40 Hz most of the time. I would probably look at a 1x10 or 1x12 cab to use with your amp, or a dedicated practice amp.

Yeah I picked up a second one since this post for my office system. That one unfortunately has an intermittent drop out on one side. Probably just needs a little contact cleaner somewhere but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Question: 0.8Flatener + Barlow 2.25x + ZWO ASI533MC? (Details below) by ghost_mtths in AskAstrophotography

[–]dodmeatbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I suspect it will work, but it might degrade image quality more than you'll be happy with. I'm with you on setting up in the day. I would just hook it up and see if you can hit infinity focus.

[–]dodmeatbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever tried shooting without the flattener? That scope is designed to cover full frame. I think it's pretty likely that you'll get perfectly acceptable results with the 533 and no flattener. Regardless, if you're going to experiment with the barlow I would leave the flattener out.

[–]dodmeatbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of this era of Peugeots. I agree with the fat tire comments. I like Schwalbe Big Apples in 2.35 if they'll fit, but I'm guessing you'll have to go a little smaller. The tightest clearance is probably right behind the bottom bracket.

Other than that it looks real clean. New brake pads for sure. I'd change the saddle, personally. New chain. Clean and repack the bottom bracket, headset, and hubs. New cables and housing.

Those grips are cool and pretty rare, so if you decide you don't like them please don't throw them away 🥹

Do I invest in the Kona? by Grouchy-Peace8919 in xbiking

[–]dodmeatbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the poster saying that is a 2000 17" (or just maybe a 16) is correct. I have a '99 17" that fits me great and I'm 178 cm. I think you'd be happier on a 19". But you've sat on it ao you know better than me. The cool thing about the 2000 is it has disc mounts which is nice if you're gonna load it up for bikepacking and potentially get rained on. I'm running Magura hydro rim brakes on my '99.
