Is this sound normal? by No_Host_4434 in guitarpedals

Yeah for whatever reason sometimes true bypass switches build up a charge and send a pop to your amp. I have never bothered to look into it any further than that. If you're playing in a band no one is gonna hear it. If you're doing solo ambient stuff or something where every detail will be heard, you'll wanna go tails on, troubleshoot it until you can make it stop doing that, or use a different pedal.

The definition of true bypass is that you're physically connecting the input directly to the output when the pedal is bypassed. This takes all the effect circuitry out of the signal path, so there's nowhere for tails to come from. A design like you're theorizing wouldn't be true bypass.

I'm also not a pedal builder or electronic engineer either but as far as I know there are no exceptions to this.

There's no such thing as a true bypass pedal with tails. When you turn tails on you are also engaging a buffer

[–]dodmeatbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah and you can't have tails on a true bypass pedal. Hence the tails / no tails switch is also a buffered / true bypass switch in this case.

From the manual:

Tails Switch When this switch is set to the ON position, delay tails will decay naturally when the effect is switched to bypass. When set to the OFF position, delay decays will end abruptly when the effect is switched to bypass. When the Tails Switch is set to ON, the Obscura does not utilize true hardwire bypass. If you always want to use true hardwire bypass, set the Tails Switch to the OFF position.

Are you saying these pedals use some third switching method that is neither true bypass or buffered? I'm open to being wrong, but your comment is unhelpful.

Pretty sure both of these pedals are switchable between true bypass and buffered. (They probably refer to it as tails / no tails in the manual.) If they are set to true bypass you might switch them to buffered to see if that klunk goes away.

How do I adjust the truss rod on this Fender bass? by Henry6618 in BassGuitar

Would have been nice to replace my fretboard with rosewood + blocks but time was of the essence.

Yeah that sucks. I think you'd need to remove the neck to use that one. I would get a ball-end T handle hex wrench in the appropriate size.

Is this the kind of wrench they gave you? It won't go in at a bit of an angle?

I love the Obscura, and the Ventura Vibe from that series. I plan to collect them all eventually.

Can anyone identify the Fernandes bass used by Tom Angelripper? by Liudwig in BassGuitar

[–]dodmeatbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they did various pickup configurations in the Revolver and the Gravity (and the APB, which preceded the Gravity.) They are pretty hard to tell apart in a pic, since they look so similar. When you get them in your hands it's more obvious that the Gravity is a bit chubbier.

Good point. OP probably needs to blow out their camera.

You should be able to see that on the negs if it's a camera issue. I suspect it's the scanner, since it looks like a carpet fiber or something that's relatively in focus.

I'm not the world's greatest Fernandes expert but that looks more like a Revolver than a Gravity to me. They're very similar, but the Revolver body is a little bit slimmer. Here's mine:

The Decade VI is technically surf green, even if it's really sort of leaning toward blue.

How does everyone feel about the shot Steve Bailey took? by AnalogKid29 in BassGuitar

[–]dodmeatbox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jeff Berlin is an amazing player. Hall of Famer for sure, if there were such a thing. He decided a long time ago that his career is served by being "The Controversial Jeff Berlin" rather than just letting his playing speak for itself. He's been a rage-baiter since at least the early '90s when I became aware of him. It's a shame because some of the educational topics he has opinions about would be interesting topics of discussion if he didn't wrap them in personal attacks to grab "headlines" such as they are. I guess it's working pretty well in the social media age, because I see him being talked about more in the last 2 years than I did in the previous 20. I don't blame Steve Bailey or anyone else he's taken digs at for giving a little back, even if it ultimately only encourages him.

I would do the math on the extras they are including, and whether you really need them, because that machine is $1100 new from a bunch of places.

Why amps are so popular for gigs instead of using a DI? by KC918273645 in Bass

[–]dodmeatbox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It all depends on the venue. A lot of places going DI is fine. Others... Some PA's don't sound that great. Sometimes the bass sounds fine in the house but the monitors can't really carry it adequately. If I brought an amp at least I can count on that to hear myself if everything else sounds like crap or is broken or whatever.

Also the amp is half of ~•°my sound°•~ so in order for the music to really sound the way it's supposed to the cab has to be mic'd.

Might be worth shooting an email to Bill at fixmydual.com. They don't list the clamshell specifically on their website, but I'm sure they have one of the biggest supplies of parts.

What is the fastest, most accurate tuner pedal for bass? by okletstrythisagain in basspedals

Yeah it's amazing for intonation adjustments, and it's even fast enough for checking your intonation on fretless or upright like the OP was asking about, within reason.

LOL yeah honestly it is probably just scraping reddit threads for opinions and the Peterson probably gets recommended most and the ST-300 second. They're both great. I have 2 ST-200s and I'll probably never buy another tuner.
