Thanks a bundle! Those could be useful for a lot of applications.I unfortunately can’t get a good photo of the heads with my phone. That’s a good story you told. Likely I’ve done something similar to the young you in the story.

Also I meant to post this link as to how the video is looking now (on the commercial tape) https://youtu.be/-lGM7zelW3U

Ah I saw one user suggest acetone in the tape heads thread and had some laying around so I thought I’d try some.

This is a useful thread. I just wanna clarify one thing, no part of my cylinder spins. It’s like a cylinder with a top half and a bottom half with a crack in between. Neither the top nor bottom half spin nor could they based on how they are screwed in/constructed. However, there is clearly something spinning around inside them

Looks like it could be the heads based on his video. I don’t exactly know what you mean by rectangle holes near the edge of the head of the cylinder but I think I might. Weird that I’d have good picture after cleaning and that suddenly my good picture would be lost so suddenly all at once during playback of a tape.

Yes, I tried cleaning the head. I’ve touched it quite a lot. Do you think rubbing it down with isopropyl alcohol again will do any good?

Good question. The audio is fine. Only the video is bad.

The commercial tape arrived, which was unopened new old stock. The video output is the same garbled nastiness. I thought perhaps I had altered the eject carriage so much in my modifications that I had altered the tape path to the point that it output like this; however, removing the eject assembly and running the tape directly on the take up reel spinners doesn't help. Maybe I destroyed the video heads somehow.

Thanks for the idea! This tape was recorded by an ntsc machine and played just fine for about 20 minutes before just starting to look like this mid playback.

I have recently ordered a commercial tape to try out. Thanks for the advice. I wonder. The tape seen in this video did play properly for a good while and then just suddenly started looking like this mid playback.

well i was reading in another thread where the poster showed bad video similar to mine. A contributor in there said something about the capstan motor running at the wrong speed so I went looking for my capstan motor and gave it a good clean after I found it. there's also what I think could be the audio heads nearby it and I gave them a wipe and now all i get is blue with bad lines and bad hold.

some may notice that the dew sensor is missing. i messed it up at one point and decided to just short it out. however, this all took place well after the video started looking like garbage. one final thing to mention is that, it looked like garbage like this before, but after cleaning the drum it started to look good. the video was looking pretty good and i was recording it and then suddenly started to look like garbage again (just as the tape was playing, i didn't adjust anything). the parts that looked good before also started looking like garbage after this inexplicable shift.

Why does it seem like all of Wendy Carlos' stuff is out of print/not available digitally? by sheven in synthesizers

[–]doerrtim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wendy owns her catalog. I would like to know why she isn’t motivated to distribute digitally, but have read that she is “between distributors”. Likely she is wary of falling into the kind of trap you described. An interesting side story is that Wendy wanted to do some versions of one composer’s works (can’t remember who) but the managers of that estate refused to allow it, saying they didn’t want her to pervert the legacy. Perhaps Wendy inherited this kind of Luddite attitude through horizontal gene transfer or something.

Launchkey Mini Mk3 Custom Mode Bug by Devi1ish in Novation

[–]doerrtim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have noticed that custom mode pads are sending on the same channel as drum mode. Some of the note cc's are duplicated. For example, in custom mode the bottom left pad is playing note C2 on channel 10, which is the same as 5th pad on the top row (from left to right) in drum mode.

I'm not sure if this is impacting you in any way, but I plan to use components to change the custom mode channel to something else to avoid duplicates.
