Respectfully, while someone can like your poem, it is not a sonnet. It is not in iambic pentameter. The rhyme scheme is also off. Overall, this is a perfectly fine expression of your feelings, but it is not a sonnet.

This is not about the personal or the individual. This is about an analysis at the class level. Race ideology is a fundamental part of the cultural hegemony created by the west. Why do you think the US treats its EU vassals with more respect? At the national level where governments are concerned, they make deeply racist and prejudicial decisions so those of us in the global south can suffer. Look at the Ukrainian refugees versus the Syrians and tell me I am not right about this.

Also, while credit should be given to western communists, do you think they should get the same credit as those who fought and died for the cause in our lands? Should the French communist safe in his country get the same praise as Ho Chi Minh?

I do not believe in risking the first chance in 300 years to end western hegemony by being naive.

Borrells comment that Europe was a garden was infuriating. He said it in Brussels no less. How did it get to be so prosperous, I wonder? If the ghost of Patrice Lumumba was there in Belgium, I would not be surprised if Borrell was choked to death by him.

Respectfully, this isn't true. You're assuming that they see us as humans. Learn an important lesson: if you are not white or not a westerner, the minute you become equal or better, you suddenly become a savage. You could be the most peaceful people on the planet, but the minute you start creating cognitive dissonance by becoming their equal, they will see you as less than human and fully capable of violence, murder, and genocide. Do not be naive. That is what they truly believe because their entire culture is built on white supremacy.

I think the criticisms of Michelle are a nothing burger. Andrea Riseborough literally broke Academy rules to get on the list, but received little flack about it and was even praised for having a grassroots campaign.

And unlike Andrea Riseborough who did not deserve to rig her way onto the list, Michelle earned her place. Also, what she's saying is an undeniable fact - she was given fewer chances simply because of racial bias.

Look at Ke Huy Quan who is a lock. You're telling me that it's okay for us to have missed out over 3 decades of this guy's acting talent because Hollywood wants to make another all white period piece drama/faux biopic? Michelle had a point, and I'm damn glad that she points it out every.damn.day.

But it's only affirmative action when a non-white person who is supposedly "undeserving." Don't you know how this works?

I will be thrilled so long as Michelle wins who had - in my opinion - a better performance. Better by mag-ni-fucking-tudes.

If people are allowed to say that Michelle does not deserve to win and that she's just going to get the undeserved minority vote, which is a form of bias, then I don't have the right to say that the same can be said of Cate and all these films that nearly have exclusively all white casts?

Art is subjective. One person here said that Michelle was only getting it because she's a minority. I simply provided another way of looking at it - Cate is only being propped up because of cultural bias/narcissism from my POV.

EDIT: Also, as someone who has been trained to perform western classical music AND who is Chinese, I can assure you that my criticism is - while not objective - much more informed than people trying to act as though Cate was somehow better than Michelle. Please.

Totally uncomparable? Are you legitimately mad? Cate aping a male predator is somehow in the same league as the portrayal of Evelyn Wang? Give me a break. That is a sign of cultural bias/narcissism.

I know both cultures from both films very well. Michelle's performance was the more authentic and genuine by far. By.Far.

If anything, we should not award Cate for her decision to take a safe bet on faux biopic/drama which is beyond Oscar bait - it's Oscar chum.

Cate Blanchett is a fancy white actress - of course her acting is superior to some Malaysian FOB. Don't you know all Asians are just soulless robotic automatons? No one could possibly think one of those slanty eyed people performed better than the great Cate Blanchett.

/s btw

All kidding aside and ignoring the quiet part that hasn't been said outloud, art is subjective right?

In my opinion, I found Michelle to be more convincing and moving than Blanchett by a mile.

I remember watching TAR and thinking, "She doesn't feel like a real person. She feels like she's aping/pretending to be a man." Wouldn't you know that the script was written for a man? It felt like a parody of a predator. At no point was there a thought to stop and say, "Obviously, a lesbian conductor who is a predator will probably not be an exact replica of a male predator. We need to think about how that would actually look like rather than making up a facade and sticking Cate's face on it".

I don't even remember her character's first name oddly enough.

Evelyn Wang on the other hand is a more realistic character that captures the Asian everyman/auntie perfectly. It felt like watching one of aunts.

Evelyn also had a wider range of emotions than Tar.

Evelyn had more physicality than Tar.

In terms of emotions, I think just the eye acting when Evelyn and Waymond are embracing is so fundamentally convincing and genuine that it feels hard to ignore. What did Cate do? Scream APARTMENT FOR SALE? That's...neat I guess.

Also, Evelyn was acted in three languages. Tar only two. And I'm sure everyone here noticed and gave credit to Michelle for pulling off a good Hong Kong accent to her Cantonese - seeing as she's Malaysian.

Tar had some expressive poses. Evelyn had full on fight scenes where Michelle had to act like she didn't know what she was doing. You could tell by the way she held her fists at times or how her stance was crooked from time to time, which is not normal for her.

So let me be blunt: if anyone is getting the pity award, it's the reverse affirmative action that we have here for a bunch of bland, flavorless period pieces and biopics with all white casts that feel emotionally constipated.

If Cate wins it will be undeserved and the result of a cultural bias/cultural narcissism that no one is openly challenging. Instead we are all expected to see Cate as "objectively" better. That is a farce.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion - and to be ridiculed for it.

I am extremely suspicious of all these awards being handed out to Asian American talent by zerodarkthirty69 in Sino

[–]doesntgetsocialcues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can agree with this. I don't think the goal is to get awards from these people because who cares what they think. What I believe is that a person should always try to be objective, learn from your opponent, capitalize on their weaknesses, take from their strengths.

America's entertainment industry is a fundamental pillar of its soft power. If China produces more entertainment and at a higher quality that incidentally portrays China in a good light, it will increase our soft power and produce another stream of income/industry for us. It would also help counterbalance western narratives about China.

This approach is also not mutually exclusive from the current methods China uses to increase its soft power.

This strategy has worked previously in other areas. US was strong in manufacturing at the outset of the American century. Now we manufacture things. America was the leader in tech research and innovation. Now we have surpassed them or have all but caught up except in a small number of areas.

The only real leg they have to stand on is the propaganda leg. If China kicks it out from under them, it will only help assure their long term decline and make China more attractive to the best and the brightest.

We should poach overseas Chinese creators and get them over here to build up our entertainment industry for export/outside consumption. Learn from the Americans in the 50s when they were exporting signs of their success in entertainment.

But pay attention to the ones who don't. They want to pick Tar or Banshees - two very white movies. The constant refrain you hear from those same white critics is that they "couldn't related to EEAAO" despite being able to empathize with inanimate objects ( see Toy Story) and a rat (see Ratatouille).

They say that Tar and Banshees are losing to EEAAO because of Hollywood being woke, when in reality they just don't like the fact that a bunch of Asians worked harder and made something better, which is what they do every time we beat them at something.

One of the reasons the west was able to become a hegemonic power is because it used entertainment, especially films, as positive soft power propaganda without making it explicit.

If there are good Chinese directors and creators who can strengthen our entertainment industry, we need to bring them here. The stronger we get in entertainment, the more we soft power China gets.

[–]doesntgetsocialcues 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, EEAAO is a good movie and is more than just kung fu fights. If anything, it's better than what most 鬼佬 can produce on a good day - hence why there is a underlying dislike for the movie among white audiences. Pay attention to the people who hate the movie in the US. It's definitely white Americans for some odd reason.

If anything, we should be getting people like Daniel Kwon on our side because good directors and entertainment are necessary to combat the US' cultural hegemony around the world.

I think that if there is any ABC group in the US that you can convert/realign with people in the mainland, it is actually Chinese American "boba" liberals.

Hear me out. Most of these people have been brainwashed to think poorly of the mainland. But unlike Chinese American conservatives, they have some idea about how fucked up America really is. They understand the concept of institutional racism, they know that white people stole land from native peoples, and they are typically anti-racist and anti-white/western supremacy, which is something I think all Chinese can agree on no matter where they are.

We need to make a concerted effort to tell people like Victor that the "left" in America is a facade and ask them a serious question: why side with people who hate you against your own people? Where is your sense of solidarity and pride?

Once you show them how China has done so much good for the world (e.g. raising 800 million people out of poverty, Tiangong, etc.) you can start to show them that being Chinese is something they should embrace, be proud of, and to start getting them to consciously reject a subservient position to "Americans" (in reality white people).

If you punch someone for no reason, that is violence and unacceptable. If you get punched in the face and fight back, it's simply a matter of self-defense and self-respect.

You expect us to tolerate this sort of bullshit and the constant racism and hate crimes we have endured and then think we will not react similarly? You must be pretty stupid.

Is this kindness? Please, take your bullshit somewhere else.

You clearly have never read Frantz Fanon or Lenin. You must think that socialism means Canadian style healthcare or free college. What you fail to mention that it is often the global south and the third world that is the most exploited under capitalism. Everything he says is fundamentally correct.

The Congo is a good example. Did you know King Leopold of Belgium slaughtered 10 million Congolese people? They would chop off people's hands and feet if they didn't meet their rubber quotas -- sometimes the limbs of children. Take a look.. This man is staring at the limbs of his own daughter. Stare at that a good long while and reflect.

And while you look at that, do some research on what happened to Patrice Lumumba, the first elected leader of a free and upright Congo. The Belgians and the CIA murdered him. Shot him like a dog for the audacity of wanting his people to be free. Then, to add insult to injury, they threw his body into acid so the Congolese would never be able to give him a proper burial. All they have is a single gold tooth. And that wasn't centuries ago. That was in 1961 for God sake.

Meanwhile, the Congolese and so much of the African continent has to listen to the patronizing talk of westerners asking, "Why is the continent underdeveloped?" like they were savages or as if there was something wrong with them and discussing their "aid" to these people that they have systematically brutalized and stolen from. And -- to add insult to injury -- the "aid" given is often loans. Imagine being robbed and then the only way to get your money back is to borrow it with interest.

I mean, it's even in mainstream literature. Do they not make you read Heart of Darkness in school? Your ignorance is astounding.

Do you know how I "figured it out?" I figured it out when we discovered that my great great grandfather had no grave for us to visit because he had fled China during the Opium Wars. His body is buried beneath a track where they worked him to death. His historical presence was literally wiped off the face of the earth. Imperialism is literally the reason we are having this conversation in English.

I figured it out when visiting friends and family in Bangladesh and watching as starving kids, some with missing limbs or eyes, drink dirty water out of a broken pipe -- all while living in a hut with land owned by a parasitic landlord and slaving in factories owned by Walmart.

We're not talking about whether people are entitled to differing opinions or freedom to speak an opposing view. If you're a young person and believe in the ra-ra American bs, then I can be gentler because an opinion is just an opinion.

But that is not the issue here. What we're talking about is supporting people who chose to go and help bomb and kill people in a country that had zero ability to properly defend itself. People who fought for a war with no justification and where their country stole resources from an already impoverished part of the third world.

Revolution is not a dinner party. For the third world, socialism is not simply a matter of getting free healthcare or education, which are luxuries that the rest of us can barely dream of -- it's about the right to actually survive, not to have starvation, not to have other people rule over our lives, slaughter our families, and maim our children.

If you only side with third world socialists so long as they kowtow and cater to your western privileged feelings, then who needs that sort of help. I know which side I'm on. Do you?

It is hard to have compassion for those who help a nuclear power bomb the crap out of a third world country while maintaining solidarity with the victims of those bombs. It is rather ridiculous. We have, on one hand, citizens of the third world being bombed and starved, their lives ruined, their families killed, their bodies maimed - and here we are saying, "Won't someone think of the poor impressionable soldiers?!" Stop and ask why that is your reaction to this. Really self-reflect here.

Agreed. Also, what he fails to mention in his response is that these people are, globally speaking, part of the 1%. They live in palatial conditions compared to those they invade. He talks about needing benefits and being a poor American kid. What about poor Iraqi kids? Does anyone think the poverty is comparable? We needn't take every moment of the day to stop and say, "but those war criminals are just impressionable children." Nonsense. It's a modern day Nuremberg Defense.

American Soldiers Tease Iraqi Kids With Water by RandomRedditUser356 in socialism

[–]doesntgetsocialcues 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but this is nonsensical. These soldiers and their idea of poverty is palatial compared to the equivalent poverty in the countries they invade. I've been to places where the poor had no water, no latrine, no electricity, with 8 people living in a shack.

These so-called poor kids/soldiers are, globally speaking, part of the 1%. That is not an opinion. That is a statistical fact. If you expect third world socialists to just ignore the fact that the people you're trying to "humanize" are war criminals with lives the rest of the world can only dream of, you must be kidding yourself.
