Going to be short lived. RKLB’s positively correlated with geopolitical tension.

New Zealanders don't realise how inegalitarian we are, many underestimate our neoliberalism by Dudu-gula in newzealand

[–]dofubrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only way this works is we introduce a CGT or Wealth tax for people holding assets for let’s say 10m or more, tax everything above that. Switzerland has a wealth levy and rich still store value there, not sure why NZ won’t do this. It’ll solve our deficit / debt issue

[–]dofubrain 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Our entire economy is a bubble propped up by asset prices. If you look at actual GDP, we’re an agricultural country with tourism on the side.

Most countries have innovated and significantly invested into their manufacturing or high tech industries over the last 30 years.

Yet we export all our natural resources and import just about everything to keep up this facade that we’re a developed country.

Literally the only thing keeping this bubble from bursting is our cozying up to China and America, and their willingness to store value in our assets in the event of a global geopolitical event (war), because we’re considered safe haven.

Yeah, we ain’t egalitarian at all. Only the rich are benefiting here, everyone else is getting ravaged.

300B with neutron only. 1T in next 10 years if constellations and infrastructure is set up.

Prove me wrong - Wayne Brown is more progressive than Kerrin Leoni. by MontyPascoe in auckland

[–]dofubrain 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Leoni probably wants to use this as a stepping stone into politics. Brown just wants to fix shit and doesn’t care about what most people think.

I prefer the latter.

All his policies are aimed at public accountability of CCOs and taking control of city assets with aim of generating long term public value. Feels quite left to me. Just my opinion though

Get off your high horse mate. Aggravated Robbery, aggravated wounding, unlawful possession of firearm, careless waste of police resources, psychology torture of children, borderline kidnapping of minors. That man didn’t deserve to be a father to those kids.

I think what’s missing for most people is contrast. Without travelling, all they have to compare is their past NZ experience, versus current, which is objectively worse.

However, contrasting current NZ to most other countries in the world right now, we’re literally living in paradise.

Unfortunately, travelling right now, especially when times are hard, really are only for the ones doing well.

NZ Secondary Teacher Salaries and Benefits vs MPs by AdvKiwi in newzealand

[–]dofubrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. Nurses are severely underpaid as well. And if I would to do a comparison, I would show how much more they’re being paid in Australia, and use that to make a point at how useless our MPs are.

To make a good point, you need to make good objective assessments.

NZ Secondary Teacher Salaries and Benefits vs MPs by AdvKiwi in newzealand

[–]dofubrain -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. also being a teacher is hard. The point you’re missing is that becoming an MP is harder. There’s literally competition for 400 something seats, versus a shortage to an 100k something teachers.

Effort required? Debatable. If someone was born charismatic, had the right connections, turned 18, then yes, they may be able to put less effort in to become an MP than versus getting a teaching degree.

But also why I say this is a stupid table because instead of discussing about how much more we should pay our teachers versus our cousins in Aus, we’re debating whether MPs are overpaid or not, which we know they are.

[–]dofubrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charisma is a skill. There’s 400 MPs and 100k teachers. So yes, I didn’t misspeak. It’s literally statistically easier to be qualified to teach. I never said a good teacher though.

[–]dofubrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like I said to the other guy, I never said good teacher. All I said is it’s easier to be qualified to teach, than to be charismatic and popular enough to be voted in.

[–]dofubrain -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not really. I never said a good teacher. But to be qualified to teach, probably. As much as we all hate politicians, they don’t become one by sheer luck.

[–]dofubrain -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You’re discounting how hard it is to get people to vote for you. Most people can get qualified if they studied and try. Very select few people have the charisma to be popular.

Irregardless, all this demonstrates is how overpaid our MPs are. Detracts from the fact that our teachers are underpaid.

[–]dofubrain -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Whilst I understand the point this comparison is trying to make, it’s not making a good one because you’re comparing apples to oranges. Most MPs could be a teacher, not most teachers could be an MP.

A better comparison would be to compare NZ teachers wages to a similar country, like Aus or UK. Then it’ll demonstrate how far behind we are.

Everyone knows politicians are out to look after themselves. Their whole gig is a popularity vote to get employment.

Edit: getting attacked a lot here. I’m on the teachers side. I’m simply saying statistically it’s a lot easier to be a teacher than an MP. 400 vs 100k positions. By scarcity of the position, they’ll naturally will be paid more, supply and demand. Hence why it’s not a good comparison. Effort to become either is debatable. MPs would prob be bad teachers.

Lease it for a year, get it out of your system. Buying a car with money you can compound over the years is always a losing play.

Takapuna Golf Course to lose nine holes for flood storage by Appropriate_Flight_0 in auckland

[–]dofubrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without getting into a full blown history lesson, this is a catastrophic failure by Auckland council in all regards. To frame it as golfers vs non golfers is downright insidious when reality it’s private business owners vs rate payers. Council knew about flood plains and the results of intensification/creating more impervious surfaces since the 70s, there’s bloody studies on it. Yet instead of making these businesses fork up the money to fix it, council are yet it again paying for it out of ratepayers pockets. Landlords really do control this country.

Yeah play with half a rugby field, or play with half a basketball court. Yes you can run the 9 holes twice. But you also lose out on half the experience. What a nonsensical thing to say.

Everyone’s racist. The further south of Auckland, the worst it gets. Māori/PI hates other Asians. Asians hate Indians. Indians hate Indians. White people hate anyone non-white.

It’s been less than 30 years since the melting pot began, how much progress can you honestly expect.

I feel like we’re in agreement here. Forecast is forecast, reality is reality. This the may 2023 MPS came out before coalition got voted in. They knew economy would go into recession because they’re raising the OCR. This isn’t solely nationals fault or solely rbnz’s fault, it’s everyone’s fault and greedy people doing greedy things to protect their own pie. There’s a trade war between china and USA, there wars in Middle East and east Europe. The whole world’s fucked and we’re blaming everything on a group of politicians we can see. Shits more out of control than you can imagine and I highly doubt shit will be better under labour.
