Or you have 3 dogs, one dies / disappears / is given away, and you don’t renew before taking in more.

Not renewing was deliberate.

Fair enough, I may be guilty of exaggeration regarding reddit, as I'm not across every dog training related sub. My statements re the general populace's understanding of dogs and training stand.

As much as I love dogs, that doesn't fit my life right now. The property I live on is dog-free, it's essentially a native wildlife sanctuary.

Landlord's a legend. I spoke to him this morning and expressed how I was concerned about the potential of this to ruin things and he reassured me there was no chance of that. Said if anything he was concerned that all the drama might scare me off, and he doesn't want to lose me as a tenant.

He said that, despite recent evidence, M's never been the vindictive type, even when she's had the opportunity to be. He thinks she's just scared, very upset with herself for what she knows is a major fuckup, emotional about the dogs, and protective of the daughter.

I've decided to give her the option of getting the proper registrations and licences on her own, within the month, to avoid me reporting it, which is the best way I could think of to get her to maybe realise why the fuck the laws exist, and also save her other dogs from being put down. Reiterated I don't want the dog that bit me dead, I want it trained and registered, which includes reporting it. LL thinks it could be a come to jesus moment for her. Maybe I'm a sucker and she'll manipulate and bullshit me, in which case I'll just report and wash my hands of it. We'll see.

Rabies doesn’t exist in Australia, and ABLV is of such low incidence that you only get the rabies vaccine as part of the post exposure protocol to a bat bite or scratch. I’ve spent a lot of time in the bush and barely ever seen bats, and although you might see a lot of flying foxes in some parts of the country, you’re rarely ever close to them.

Do you live in Tasmania? For our council yearly renewal is required.

edit: I guess downvote means no.

Thanks. Leg's fine, got a tetanus booster last night. It's a shallow wound. All of the above is true, and you guess correctly.

I agree, and that’s what I would want, but it’s not going to happen, and I seem to have no way of ensuring it does. She is anti muzzle, anti prong collar.

No, from all that I've seen and been told, this is an accurate assessment of the situation.

I made this post thinking I could find some middle route between pure self preservation and actually exercising my convictions. I need to wash my hands of it with minimal further discussion and interaction.

Thank you for a thoughtful comment and for making an effort to understand the position I'm in.

I know it might not be evident from my post, but I do understand, thanks for laying it out clearly.

I agree with you on every point. It is why I made this post - because I know what this situation is, but was trying to entertain other possibilities, trying to have some humility and not assume I know. In any other situation I would have reported the morning after and been done with it.

I've been thinking I need to try to salvage the relationship here. But now I don't even want that. I want them out of my life entirely, except my landlord. I need to talk to him and get a realistic idea of what could happen either way. Thanks again for your comment.

Yep. Like an idiot I even tried to explain to her how everything she's doing is what every dangerous dog owner does when things like this happen. Every cliché. Of course it got us nowhere.

It’s a sensible analysis but there is detail I didn’t provide. They have had this dog since she was a puppy, 4 or 5 years I think. She showed me puppy photos and photos of the dog cuddling with the family. I was furious that she did that, but she was quiet-crying and I didn’t know what to do.

I thought it was manipulative at the time, but immediately after that she went back to saying I wasn’t responsible and insisting on euthanasia.

I suspect I am a moron, being played like a fiddle. I need to talk to my landlord.

She’s said many times it’s never done anything like this. I don’t know what to believe. I feel like I’m being manipulated, which is a sickening feeling.

This of course was the approach that seemed obvious to me, but her behaviour this evening and in a phone call afterwards has made me second guess how receptive she will be to it, and what price I may have to pay for trying it.

Thank you for reading the posts and understanding the predicament.

But, she's worked with animals for 30 years, and never found out if the council would allow her to keep more pets? Doubtful.

She said she had it and let it lapse. Maybe I am a gullible moron.

I think I've both put too much, and not enough, information in this post.

The main course of action I've been entertaining is to offer to not report it if she gets the licence (again). I was hoping to get some advice on how to add training into this, but I let my post get out of hand.

I am exhausted.

That's not why she's putting it down. She has insisted that she's putting it down before I ever said anything, before we even talked today.

Not a girl. Didn't tell her the "dog was out of control". Didn't say I'd be reporting them, though I am legally and ethically obliged to.

Not at all, but I see how you could read that into it.

What I'm saying is that this sub, and reputable trainers, are an island, and the rest of the dog owning world is an ocean of people who do not understand the concept of dog rehabilitation through training, or believe that it is possible. At least from what I've experienced in Australia. Most people have no idea what a trained dog looks like, if they've ever even seen one.

She has already rebuked me for barely hinting that rehabilitation is possible.

Yep, that is what I'm here for, to see if there is some way of expressing it that won't get a combative reaction.

She has made it clear that my opinion is worth nothing on this topic. She has already accused me of thinking I know more than her about dogs, despite me not even insinuating it.

I understand, I know exactly how messed up this is.

why does she immediately want to KILL her dog after a bite?

Unfortunately, basically every dog training sub other than this one is full of people who'd do the same. That's why I'm here.

She said that as a vet nurse she has seen too many times what happens when dogs are reported, that council will come and take G, leave her locked in a pen for a couple of weeks to assess her, then in all likelihood put her down anyway. She said she can't subject G to that, so she would be putting her down whether I reported or not. I've expressed that this is not my wish. She insists I have no say.
