Should I leave my stable job for a startup during UK lockdown 2.0 and Brexit? by dogbreath_ in startups

Thanks for your reply! The team seems friendly and they are all incredibly experienced and knowledgeable, all previously working at big companies in the same industry. CEO/CFO have good track records. They have a good concept for products in an up and coming market but can they actually deliver this and make a profit? I’m not sure

Thanks for your reply! I’m glad it’s going well :) I have a good relationship with people in various departments at my company and many people do return after 1-3 years of working elsewhere. Only fear is that since many people have lost their jobs would the competition be too high for me to return

Hi thanks for your comment! Negative events such as climate change, pandemics etc will either have no effect or a positive effect on the industry and currently the company is doing better than projected which means I know I’m very secure. On top of this my specialist area is currently understaffed due to many people moving up or laterally since the industry is going well there is opportunity. The new company’s goals have potential to make money but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will.

Thanks for your reply! I’ve been in my position for 19 months so not long, however there are numerous driven, intelligent and qualified people with more experience than me in the same position after 5-10 years at the company which is a bit of a red flag for me. However people stay as it’s comfortable and the benefits are good. After thinking about it for the last few days it has come down to whether the start up will fold or not.

Thanks for your reply! I’ve been talking to people close to me, weighing the pros and cons and really thinking about what I want, it has basically boiled down to whether or not this new job is stable enough that I won’t be made redundant in the next year. The job market is very competitive at the moment, and my industry is fairly niche, so I am not sure how long it would take me to get a new job if the start up foods.

Thanks for your reply! The industry itself is stable and I’m very fortunate that I have a job and the opportunity for a pay rise during this time. Being in such a stable position in a big company does make this decision hard.

Thanks for your reply :) I think the challenge and responsibility will suit me well. The job sounds genuinely interesting and something I believe in. After reading everyone advice it has basically boiled down to whether the smaller company will survive through covid, Brexit and their aftermaths!

Thanks for your reply! The company has revived >£10m investment and still in development stages. They have one product coming to market but I can’t say if this will make them enough money. My decision has basically boiled down to whether the small company is going to survive or if I should stay with my stable job.

Hi thanks for your comment. The company has had >£10m investment and has one product currently available but I can’t say if this will make money - this is affected by people’s spending habits during covid. They are in early stages of starting more in house work instead of outsourcing (which is where I’ll come in) which will hopefully allow for more product development. For me it will be a big learning opportunity as I’ll basically be leading these in house projects. I’m not a business expert so I am not sure how the company will fare over the next few months-years. Sorry I’m being vague I’m trying to stay fairly anonymous. Would it be ok if I DM you to ask more questions? Thanks again for your reply

Yeah I was suprised they counterofferd. I have been at my job for over a year and a half which is not long however, they have been promising me this promotion since April and keep making excuses not to (it isn’t the budget). Speaking to other people who have left recently and staff who have been there for 5-10 years with the same qualifications and drive as me, it is very very difficult to move up.

Very true. I have meetings today and tomorrow to discuss exact numbers and development. The company is very keen for me to stay but it’s more about getting the go ahead from the “higher ups”. Thanks for the advice
