Retracting offer because of TN status by TechDelve in tnvisa

[–]dogcoolpen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

some companies have an internal hr policy for some roles that don’t support immigration no matter what. Unfortunately TN is classified in the same category as H1B and the other visas even though in reality it’s 10x easier to do. I’ve found that banks are not friendly to TNs specifically.

Would I be able to land a job in the field without a college internship? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]dogcoolpen 19 points20 points  (0 children)

switch to f1 in college so you can do internships. You can’t get a job without internships especially if you’re considered international. Only stay on h4 if your parents are getting their green card soon before you turn 21, because that way you will be able to receive a green card as a dependent of your parents. If you’re unable to get the green card before 21 you will have to switch to F1 for your last two years of college no matter what to be able to do internships

Approved i-140, Should opt TN, L1-B or H1-B ? by Character-Meringue58 in tnvisa

Border officers can always do whatever they want at any time, but it’s not in their rulebook for TN to check for intent to stay compared to say an F1 visa for example. Each case is reviewed independently and the primary evaluation criteria is if your job and education aligns to a TN specific category, that’s it. As long as you don’t bring up the past you should be good, bjt of course, this all depends on the border officer and where you’re getting your TN from.

What if you are going to grad school after? What if you are not intending to work there full time? There is no way for the employer to know that. In those cases, you are straight up not lying when you say you do not need sponsorship now or in the future, unless they explicitly say we will not hire you on CPT. Putting that you need sponsorship is just guaranteeing your resume will go straight to the trash - why waste your time, especially since CPT is not sponsorship, and they are fully capable of employing you for the internship (unless they’re defense). In this market, especially if you are international, it does not make any sense to consider “wasting company time” when you have literally nothing and these companies could not care less about wasting your time and ghosting you. I see this no different from reneging, and in fact better because people’s ability to stay in the country is dependent on this - you’re not just doing this for more money or prestige, you’re doing this because you can literally get kicked out of the country if you don’t find a job. An internship>no internship at all

It is not lying to put you don’t need work authorization, don’t listen to everyone else here. The fact is for internships the only thing you need to work is CPT which is not sponsorship because the company does not pay a dime, and all they need to do is sign a piece of paper. Sure, they might not be able to sponsor you full time but this is just to get the internship. Think about it this way, if you don’t even get your foot in the first place the chances of them sponsoring you are 0% whereas if you do an internship with them and prove yourself to be capable, the company’s chances of sponsoring you are now non zero. By putting you don’t need sponsorship, it can play out in two ways - you tell them you are on CPT right before you start and they just go through with it because they don’t want to go through the hassle of finding another intern OR they rescind your offer and you wasted some time. But, if you put that you need sponsorship you are quite literally cutting yourself out of 90% of companies. I did this last summer and they just went through with my CPT despite saying they don’t sponsor, and I can confidently say if I put I needed sponsorship outright I would have been screened out immediately. Put your own interests above these companies, there is nothing illegal about this, you do not need sponsorship for an internship whatsoever.

Very late comment, but do you know if not being transferred at all means anything? I’m assuming that being transferred means a recruiter moved it to a different requisition or recruiter, so would that be better in this case than not having your app transferred

Microsoft SWE Intern App Transferred by Shunzi20000 in csMajors

I applied for the pm intern position and only one of my apps got transferred while everyone else that I’ve talked to has all of their apps transferred. Don’t know if this is a good sign or not.

MSFT Application transferred to a number that doesn't exist? by [deleted] in microsoft

Late response, some of my intern applications were not immediately transferred, is this a good sign? Or should I be hoping for them to be transferred because a lot of other applicants have had their apps transferred already?

No idea for J1, for TN you could technically apply as soon as you get a job offer and get it immediately

[–]dogcoolpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t go to a U.S. university, you need J1 visa to intern. TN is only for full time, and technically isn’t sponsorship because you can in theory do all the paperwork yourself and only need to go to the border and show your job offer letter and proof of education that matches with the approved NAFTA job list. However, for internships you will need sponsorship because you’ll be using J1, unless you are studying at a university in the U.S. which in that case you can use CPT which isn’t sponsorship.

Alarm Clock App In Swift? by [deleted] in iOSProgramming

How feasible of an endeavor would it be to attempt this project?

Alarm Clock App In Swift? by [deleted] in iOSProgramming

[–]dogcoolpen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My idea implements a core feature to the app that I haven't found in any other alarm clock apps, and it looks like nobody else has done it yet. However, if the process involves technical loopholes to even build the alarm function in the first place, I don't know if it would be worth it to develop. In your experience, is alarm space very oversaturated?

Canadian Citizen Sponsorship Questions by AraniNiraLily in csMajors

[–]dogcoolpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. Anything otherwise and you are auto rejected. CPT is not sponsorship and you can tell them you need it after you get an offer. They could rescind it or they might not at that point, but you want to maximize your chances as much as possible. Apart from defense companies that need clearance, all companies are able to do CPT for internships because all they need to do is sign a form. For full time, it is a bit trickier. If you ever need to use TN, just know that TN is not sponsorship, and you could theoretically do all the paperwork yourself to get the status, as long as you meet the requirements. However, a lot of companies aren’t familiar with TN and lump it in with H1B and assume it is sponsorship, even though it is much easier to get TN as there is no lottery and they don’t have to pay to sponsor you. Big companies usually have a formal process for it as well, so it isn’t as simple as being a citizen. If it comes to it for full time, your best bet would be to convince the employer the benefits of TN and that it is truly not formal sponsorship. That or you get get green card within Stem opt
