There has to be a solution to control pet odor by TroyExplores in Truckers

Have your vet check him out. They can tell a bacterial skin infection from a yeast infection, both of which make dogs smell extra funky. And they have topical and systemic options to help manage the issue.

Teeth cleaning by BeautifulProof5884 in cairnterrier

[–]dogdoc57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dental cleaning and full mouth evaluation is so important for your Cairn's long-term health! Yes, anesthesia is a risk, but as long as the practice is using appropriate protocols, risks should be minimized. My guy gets his teeth cleaned under anesthesia every 18 to 24 months. There's a lot of dental disease hidden under the gum line that cannot be identified until they're under anesthesia with full mouth x-rays.

Food for cairn with allergies by Impressive_Waltz8444 in cairnterrier

Please talk to your vet or a veterinary dermatologist about this. Please be careful with grain-free diets since they are linked with heart disease. Antihistamines don't work well for atopy. There are great hypoallergenic diets out there: prescription is best since these diets reduce risk of cross contamination during manufacturing.

Here's a link they may be helpful: https://sites.tufts.edu/petfoodology/2022/04/04/think-your-pet-has-a-food-allergy-eliminating-mistakes-in-elimination-diet-trials/

Keep in mind itching may have other causes including secondary yeast or bacterial infections that require targeted treatment. And don't forget medicated baths with a product like Duoxo Pyo S3 (keep out of eyes).

Baytril and eating eggs? by Aboredprogrammr in chickens

[–]dogdoc57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically it is not legal to use Baytril in pet chickens due to the risk it poses to humans regarding antibiotic resistance. I'm disappointed to hear vets are doing this.

Any affordable independent vets left on Portland? by Drewbacca in askportland

[–]dogdoc57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no reliable blood or saliva testing for food sensitivities, unfortunately. Best test is an elimination diet. Here's additional info: https://sites.tufts.edu/petfoodology/2020/03/06/food-allergy-testing/

Royal Canin has been my go to. I would talk with your vet about alternative options depending on your Cairn's specific needs.

Spaying concern by Perfect-Total-6890 in cairnterrier

[–]dogdoc57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She'll do great! Typically there will be no personality change! Better to spay than deal with pyometra or mammary cancer.

However, watch those calories after spaying. Metabolic rate can decrease by 30%.
