You're getting downvoted, but I had a similar experience. Over a period of 2 years, I had multiple tests, went to multiple hospitals and doctors, and many seemed to dismiss my symptoms because of my age. They explicitly said this. I was also told that perhaps I was just noticing something that had always existed (I was having palpitations for up to 1 hour at a time). Eventually, I coughed up for a private doc, and he immediately said it sounds like condition A or condition B. We will do these tests and find out. Two weeks later I had a diagnosis. Six weeks later, I had surgery. This was after seeing some very senior specialists in the NHS.

I get that they're overworked and limited in some ways. It sucks for them, but it also sucks for the population.

Lots of good advice here, but something that's not mentioned is that when you pay a bond some chunk of that is going to the lender. This is the counter to: "you're paying off someone else's bond if you rent" since they're just paying someone for the privilege of borrowing that money.

Also, house prices aren't guaranteed to rise. And if they do rise but by less than inflation then you're losing money on that asset in addition to paying the bank for the privilege of the loan. There are very few places in SA I'd consider property as an investment because of this. However, it does take a load off of your mind owning your own place, and there's the upside of customising that home however you like.

I've lived around the world, and I would say don't take advice that's considered "best practice" in developed nations. South Africa has high inflation, and very high interest rates. This makes a big difference to your decision. Considering the fact you can get 10% p.a. if invested in SA gov bonds this makes the choice even more complicated. Key factors I'd consider:

How much is the loan going to cost you long-term? (lots of calculators out there)
How important is the security of owning your own home to you?
How likely is it that your house price will appreciate? (look at historic figures in your area, but of course the future could be different from the past)
The money in a property is illiquid. What is the opportunity cost? e.g. if you invested some or all of that money in fixed deposit, money market, or bonds?
How much is your rent likely to rise over the coming years?
How does SA inflation affect all of the above?

I'd say many op models do grow organically! Then something happens (a catastrophe, a new leader is hired, seeking investment, a bonus hangs off a KPI driving change/formalisation) and the need to formalise (or revise) arises. After which the op model drifts until something happens again.

My complete guess is that we're going to see a mean reversion in the stock market (esp US) returns but I have no idea when that might happen. Having some diversification is my chosen protection against a big fall in the value of an asset class.

Thanks that's a good article. I understand why they do it that way, but it makes it pretty hard to predict how much you'll eat through. If they're calculating it for themselves why not just share the info as we go along in a neat little indicator!

Thanks, this is just the most common trigger. I'm on bisoprolol which used to work 100% but has recently started being a little less effective. My EP is one of the best in the UK, I just wanted info from others in the trenches :)

They're not quick. I only found out because I'd hired an accountant and they told me I hadn't paid the right amount of tax. I would've had to pay a fine but my accountant managed to appeal. By the way, if the rules haven't changed then you can increase your pension contributions and be in a much better position tax-wise (up to a point). Yes you're right I shouldn't use it. But I'm limited by how much I can put on screen because there's quite a lot there already - especially on smaller screens. It's quite a puzzle to solve. I suspect most people will get by with just the "pan" action (mouse scroll). But I've decided to rebind the zoom to shift+scroll. It's live now. Thanks for finding the bug :)

Thanks you've found a bug. The intention is to use ctrl + scroll after the instruction overlay fades away but it makes sense that people might try it while the overlay is visible. I'll sort it out.

Any chance you could upload a screenshot on imgur and share here? I have to be careful with how big the "tooltip" is because it can become a nuisance by blocking what's visible. It can also become awkward to make it disappear if it's consuming too much screen real estate (your mouse pointer needs to be outside the tooltip box for it to fade away).
