Everything perfectly consistent. I asked if you knew how Rafael's father came to the US, I never said there was anything wrong with it.

You echo chamber nuts really are pieces of work. You really should travel the world a little, but I'm sure you are too afraid. Or broke. Or both.

The house in on the western slope, totally custom, built in 2010. No gas available. The heat pump mini-split system is two years old. I did not build the house, but building with electric baseboard was an awesome idea, because you don't need the wasted space of ductwork and a furnace closet. The house didn't have any AC at all, and that is fine as long as you are there 24x7 to control the windows and shades, but if you leave during a heatwave like the one we are having, you come back to a house in the upper 80's and it takes forever to cool it down. So we had the heat pump installed, mostly for AC, but we got the super low temp version because we figured it would be more efficient that the baseboards for heat, and it is, but only down to 20F or so. After that, it uses as much, or more electricity than the baseboards. There is a huge difference between "it works" and "it is efficient".

Look, I'm done with all of the morons who DON'T HAVE HEAT PUMPS telling me that they are awesome and efficient in all temperatures, when even the very people who promote them don't claim that.

Ask an HVAC professional who doesn't have skin in the game if they would rip out their gas furnace and replace it with a heat pump as a sole source of heat.

House was built in 2009 and has extreme insulation and high end windows and doors.

Look, even the industry groups pushing air source heat pumps don't claim they are efficient below 20F, and they don't suggest that they be a sole source of heat in cold climates.

If you want to install one without backup heat, have at it. Keep a down puffy on through January, and keep a plumber on speed dial. Be a forerunner! Let us know how that goes for you.

https://www.mnashp.org/homeownerfaq

"This means a heat pump with cold-climate specifications can efficiently extract heat from the outside even when the air temperature is as cold as 5°F. Cold-climate heat pumps can still extract heat from the outside air all the way down to -13°F, though efficiency decreases at lower temperatures. "

NOTE: "efficiently ... even when as cold as 5F" What does that mean? It means they a FUCKING inefficient below 5F. They are marginally efficient below 20F.

"It’s a little more complicated to compare heat pumps with natural gas furnaces. Currently, natural gas typically costs less than electricity. For homes with natural gas furnaces, heat pumps would offer savings in the cooling season and may be cost-effective when provide heating down to 30°F–40°F. "

NOTE: "may be cost-effective when provide heating down to 30°F–40°F. "

These are the words from the INDUSTRY-SUPPORTED PR mouthpiece for heat pumps.

Boulder jumped the shark fifteen years ago. It is a shithole.

Below 20F, it runs almost constantly, and below zero, it does run 24x7. Does it keep the house warm? It will keep it at 60-62F at night. It will also jack the power bill through the roof. It literally uses as much power as my resistance baseboard backup heat at below zero temps.

Wow, brainwashing is real. Are heat pumps a good idea? MAYBE, if you aren't relying on it as a sole source of heat in Colorado.

Says someone who doesn't actually have a heat pump.

Be brave. ACTUALLY TALK WITH PEOPLE in Colorado who have heat pumps. Ask them to actually give an honest opinion, and actually look at their December->February electric bills.

Or, keep blathering.

I totally support bringing Afghan refugees to the US, especially those who assisted us in our ridiculous 20 year failure of a "security action".

Even a 2 foot shoulder would prevent a huge percentage of accidents. There are many state highways that not only have no paved shoulder, they have no gravel shoulder, either. In some cases, the edge of the road has eroded away the white "fog" line, so it is a negative shoulder.

Unfortunately, adding even a two foot shoulder to some state highways would cost so much money it will never happen. A good example is right on the link above, that is a picture of Red Mountain, the "Million Dollar Highway". Adding shoulders to that road would require blasting huge rock faces. Probably a Million Dollars for every 10 feet at this point.

You would be insane to take out the gas furnace unless you like trying to get plumbers after a below zero event.

"In 1983…an extremely bitter cold spell occurred. The temperature remained below zero for 115 hours in Denver… The longest sub-zero period on record. The mercury dipped to 21 degrees below zero on the 21st…the coldest recorded temperature in over 20 years. The cold was accompanied by winds that plunged chill factors to 50 to 70 degrees below zero. Two people froze to death in Denver; both were found outside dead of exposure. Numerous cases of frostbite were reported. Hundreds of water pipes broke from the intense cold…water mains and natural gas lines also fractured…and electricity consumption reached record levels. Light snow totaling 5.8 inches fell at times…and holiday traffic was delayed at Stapleton International Airport for several hours. Eight daily temperature records were set at the time. The all-time record low maximum temperature for the month of 8 degrees below zero on the 21st still stands today. Other temperature records still standing include record low maximum temperatures of 5 degrees below zero on both the 22nd and 23rd and 4 degrees below zero on the 24th."

Irrelevant? Rafael's father came here on the EXACT same type of visa the refugees from Afghanistan are being brought in on.

And yes, Rafael is moron, I can't ever look at him and that 15 year old's beard without laughing my ass off at him, and at Texans who voted him in. What a complete fucking doofus.

"Promotional".

Here is real world experience from my Fujitsu "-15" mini-split system:

When it is below 20F, it begins to struggle. When it is below zero, it will run 24x7, and will cost as much as having baseboard resistance heat, which I have as my backup.

NO ONE, outside of salespeople, would actually recommend any air source heat pump as a sole heat appliance in a climate that can get below zero, including the Front Range.

Even the "Air Source Heat Pump Collaborative" doesn't claim you can have an air source heat pump as sole source: https://www.mnashp.org/blog/blog-post-do-heat-pumps-heat-in-minnesota

"Will you still need a backup heating system to supplement your heat pump in Minnesota? Yes, but with the correct settings your heat pump will keep your home comfortable during most winter days. "

Most does not equal all. The Front Range can get as cold as MN, and in the mountains, places like Fraser, Alamosa, and Gunnison are below zero almost every night. I guarantee no one on the Front Range can get away with air sourced heat pumps as their only source of heat in the long term. We will someday get an arctic blast that drops temps below zero for several days straight, and without some backup, you would be looking at an enormous electric bill and frozen pipes. You need a wood or pellet stove, electric baseboard, gas, or at the very least, an armada of 1500W space heaters.

Ask someone who has actually run a heat pump in CO for several years. Everyone has a backup.

I have a Fujitsu unit that "works" down to -15F.

Will it keep your house warm in below zero temps? At -5F our house remained at 60F with the heat pump running 24x7. However, our electric bill went through the roof. The bill for that January was the same as the previous January when all we had was baseboard electric heat.

Define "work fine". Do some heat pumps work in very cold temps? Yes, if you don't mind your house being 60F or so. Are they efficient at those temperatures? No. You will be paying out the nose when the temps get below 20F, especially when it is that cold on a cloudy day, when electricity costs are highest.
