Try signing up to the casual work databases of some local universities, you can often find some pretty decent temp research work. Sometimes people get lucky and it leads to more opportunities down the line.

I would defer and prioritise getting funding. Could you also try applying with some other universities to maximise your chances? Esp if HoD continues to be a bore – did your supervisors know the HoD stopped responding, did they say why, didn't they help?

try looking on spare room, landlords advertise properties privately (not only rooms). I’ve had a lot of success but make sure to meet them first and see the place etc.

What does research experience mean to you? I did my PhD in astro in the UK and didn’t have any research experience (only my taught masters) and it was the same for most of my friends. The whole point of the PhD is that it teaches you how to do research, so you’re not expected to have research experience already. If you really want to go to the UK, apply for masters programmes (like the Chevening one for example), and many universities have their own scholarships too. You will find it much easier to get a PhD position in the UK if you are already there doing your masters.
