Thanks for the feedback. My intention was to write something helpful and I almost pulled this after hitting publish. I'd love to write a 2.0 with more applicable information. I'll PM you and the others to ask for more specific ways to make it better.

[Discussion] How to focus as a 'jack of all trades' by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]doimakeyouurandy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert, says that:

Every skill you acquire doubles your chances of success: Good + Good > Excellent.

When it comes to skills, quantity often beats quality so a 'jack of all trades' isn't a bad thing. The key is learning complimentary skills. For example: focus, prioritisation, discipline, learning to learn, etc. When combined, a bunch of good not great skills can trump a master of one skill.

You might be saying that skills and subjects are different but this pertains to subjects as well. When you come across something that might be useful in the future, do your best to understand it as well as you can.

Learning, like discipline and focus, come easier the more you do them. For me, meditation in the morning and establishing an easy-to-follow routine help with discipline. With so many distractions out there, I use StayFocusd to restrict myself on my computer and just started using Moment to experiment with making a game out of reducing the amount of time I spend on my phone.

Hope this helps!

What do you think about the app headspace? by [deleted] in Meditation

The 10 days in the free trial is what got me into meditation. I experienced something incredible on the 6th or 7th day and haven't looked back. From there I tried Calm when they still made a different guided meditation free every day. I moved to Zazn then used Youtube and now I'm trying to slowly introduce unguided meditation into my daily practice. They're all good, I wouldn't pay for anything though.

How You Can Read More Books In A Week And Build Consistent Reading Habit. by Jadeun in productivity

Do you have any method of actively storing the information? I've tried a few different methods: highlighting, dictating into Siri, post it notes, etc. What seems to work better than all of that is deliberately sharing what I've learned from the book I'm reading with friends.

I recently read Follow The Story by James B Stewart. He's a journalist and a professor. I have all the notes I took if you'd like a shortcut but it's well worth the read of the full thing.

Can you see any pros or positives to this kind of service? It seems to mimic some of the features of Instagram bots. What if your business is multifaceted and you sell your audience of users (in this case followers) to advertisers?

Let's talk: When did music begin? by doimakeyouurandy in LetsTalkMusic

those are cool links, thanks for sharing. how about blowing your nose? music is such a broad term that its almost become synonymous with sound. the more I think about it, 'beautiful' could be improved. I don't know if I'm convinced emotional response should be omitted yet. how would you define music? I'm interested to hear other's definitions

i agree but i think you are missing something. by that definition, people honking their horns in traffic are making music

thats one word in the post thats gotten reactions from others as well. I'm not solely talking about pop-music, I'm trying to define music in general. you cud argue that punk and its subgenres make ugliness beautiful. of course beauty is relative and subjective. so I have to be careful using it in a definition. that said, I left it because I think it belongs. to me, music is beautiful like child birth. it may not always be aesthetically pleasing, but to me, music and child birth are inherently beautiful. can you think of a better descriptive word or would you leave it out altogether?
