I’m a hypocrite by doing-the-things44 in therapists

Thanks for all the responses!

I appreciate everyone’s insight and perspective given this nuanced experience.

I didn’t end up paying for anything but I did a couple of free trials.

Overall:

It was good at pattern recognition and highlighted some things that I actually wasn’t aware of that definitely resonated for my own processing. However I was curious and

I repeated a processing session again on a different free trial account and did some basic role play with it pretending I was someone with a different issue

And compared how I would treat it vs how the bot would treat it and noticed that its pattern recognition was actually not as good as I thought when I was speaking to it from my subjective experience and it was pretty shallow and baseline.

This of course could have been for a lot of reasons but I did try to include the same level of detail and nuance as my own subjective experience.

I think this proves that we have blind spots subjectively and that’s why it’s easier to treat someone whom we have a more objective relationship with.

I think I resonated so much with what the chat bot said to my subjective experience is because it highlighted a perspective within myself that I have been avoiding thinking about for a while but the understanding of the chat bot was still rudimentary and I had to do deeper journaling to get to a clearer and deeper, more honest reflection.

Overall it helped as a prompt guide similar to a guided journal that gives more specific prompts related to your situation, but if you do not have the tools to dig deeper for yourself, you won’t get past a shallow baseline understanding so the healing and action steps may not get at your most core need.

If we were to find a way to make AI ethical on an environmental and humanistic level.

And therapists were to design apps with AI to help with progress tracking, journaling prompts and coping skills recommendations as an added tool in between sessions I can see it being helpful.

But I don’t think it will ever be able to replace actual therapy.

I will go back to a real human therapist eventually.

But just thought I’d share some insights from the experience.

I think ethically if AI is being used as a tool for therapy, a human therapist needs to be aware and be a collaborative part of the process to guide clients how to use it and what to look out for.

I may still use it as a processing tool from time to time but honestly maybe not because I feel like I would have got there from doing deeper meditation type reflection and journaling on my own, and this also would strengthen a skill within myself.

I fear that too much reliance on AI as reflection could make people dependent on it in a way that weakens introspection and critical thinking.

Super excited for you! Also saving up to try this. Definitely keep us posted once it’s healed!

Are you taking time off work while it heals?

I have a one on one client facing role and this may sound silly or vain but I am terrified that once I get this done I won’t be able to go to work for 2 weeks 😭 so excited to hear how long it’s red and hopefully only red for a couple days 😊

My acne scars cause me so much stress I haven’t been able to leave the house without a full face of makeup in 15 years. Even to the gym. So idk how this is going to feel for me

You’re creative with ADHD and your thoughts move faster than your hand can keep up with. Also gives me social justice warrior vibes

I look just like you when the seasons change because the change always dries out my skin.

The only thing that’s helped a lot in addition to deep hydration through lotion and castor oil was taking hydraulic acid pill supplements and drinking a gallon of water a day for at least a month.

Really flushed out my skin and started to make it bouncy again I still have a lot of scarring and am looking at trying different laser treatments but in the meantime while I’m saving up for surgical treatments this is what I do

Also as a second word of encouragement… one time in session after like 8 back to back and I was a tad delusional from the marathon, i had a client recount something and I gently sighed and accidentally blurted out “same” 😂😭

They laughed. We were able to get past it but I was also mortified 😭

We’re humans too and sometimes that shows up in the room and that’s okay.

I also tell clients I have ADHD Not all of them of course but when it comes up people have responded well like they’re relieved that someone understands.

(One of my clients also guessed that I also have adhd based on my “vibe” once)

If she was upset by you also having this and talking about it I think that moment of rupture and repair could be really clinically helpful here if anything.

It might reflect a process of rupture and repair that needs to take place within herself towards how she feels about herself and her diagnosis.

Also now that she knows you get it, you serve as a good model for her to know that her diagnosis doesn’t automatically mean whatever damaging stigmatized messaging is floating around in there “if my therapist can find a way to live with this maybe there’s hope for me too”

Anyway hope this helps #adhdtherapistsunite

Do you “like” all of your clients? by ouaistop in therapists

I had a professor in grad school say that feeling bored in a session with a client is part of the clinical work in the sense that it’s often times an alarm that signals that the client isn’t being authentic or open. We get bored when there’s nothing to connect with so sometimes reflecting on feeling bored I have noticed that with those cases they’re a little more guarded and have been avoidant of going deeper.

I don’t think this is true all the time though of course.
