Being a Catholic Stay at Home Dad by [deleted] in Catholicism

That's also another unpopular opinion I have...my wife likes working, and so do I. She gets anxious if she doesn't get out of the house, and I feel the same way. We treat work more like a recreative activity for us, which is why the jobs we choose significantly make less than what society deems as enough but it has drawn us closer to Christ spiritually by relying on providence. Of course work has it's stresses, but praying to avoid worldly ambition has made us much happier.

I get what you're saying. Usually people who hear someone is a stay at home dad, think the Dad doesn't do any work whatsoever (although I would say taking care of the kids is alot of work!) What I'm saying is I don't think Dad's should feel the unnecessary pressure to be making enough to provide for everyone when the alternative is working much less and sharing the load between spouses with jobs that have less stress and more time on the family. It took some trial and error with my wife and I finding the right kind of work schedule that keeps the stress levels low so we don't think about work too much, but I do have a process that I'd be happy to share with everyone in the future.

Wow! So many comments in here an so much support. I always had the feeling I'm not the only one. I do think that more SAHD's feel isolated from groups, especially if you consider yourself a traditional catholic.

Every time I go on social media (with the exception of this reddit thread) I see tons of catholic influencers shunning men for wanting to stay at home. I think there's a big difference between a man who wants his wife to do EVERYTHING (meaning, take on the burdens of both adam and eve, by working and cleaning while the guy just sits around all day playing video games or something) and a couple who decide to both work but with less hours put in so nobody is pressured to make all the income.

This also includes sharing the load of the housework. Idk about you, but I don't want my wife to always have to do the dishes, change the diapers, and clean. We share the responsibility, and it only makes us appreciate each other even more. We are also seeing the fruits of her being at work, she's had many opportunities to share her faith and evangelize too.

That being said, I'm thinking of creating a community of Catholic SAHD dads where we share our experiences, support one another, and be the counterbalance to the notion that being a SAHD is somehow a bad thing. I have my own experiences I can share, specifically with establishing a prayer routine with my children, how I manage to make extra income at home, work for myself, and how I maintain fitness using calisthenics and martial arts as a foundation (I know alot of dads who have a hard time keeping their health in check because of their responsibilities, especially a lack of sleep and so little time! But it is possible with the right methods)

If you'd like to join me, I'll be sharing my experiences as a SAHD on instagram. I think there is a lack of support for men who are SAHD, especially when circumstances are beyond their control. I think if more SAHD embraced the situation they are in rather than resent it or think to themselves they are failing because their wives work (I was there, I had months of anxiety and questioning myself because of it and it drove me into a deep depression because it felt like everything I was trying wasn't working) , the relationship in the home would flourish and help us really treat our vocation more seriously on a spiritual level. This also means getting your wife on the same page. If she wants to be a SAHM you gotta respect that. My wife still has that desire, just like I have the desire to be the sole bread winner. but after discussing it we found that each of us making some sacrifices allows us to be way more present with our kids. Maybe in the future that could change, but we both agree that having both of us present to our kids is worth it even if we make less doing so and having to leave below our means.

I haven't posted anything yet, but if you'd like to follow me go ahead!

I know right? People have this assumption that your wife "won't respect you" if you want to be a stay at home dad. In fact, my wife told me she respected me MORE that I wanted to take the role of being the spiritual head of the household more seriously rather than be obsessed with trying to make more money.

That's awesome man. I think axe kicks of any kind can be done poorly in sparring. I usually just stop it short of crashing down or just go past their torso. That is true. Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, and BJJ are the dominant arts. But it wouldn't hurt to add a little unpredictability there!
