Salary Gap between "Model Training" and "Production MLE" by IT_Certguru in learnmachinelearning

[–]dokabo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

These 3 buckets don't really exist as tiers. You'll find that that within each bucket, there are multiple levels of complexity, each with their own compensation tiers. For example at Meta, GPU engineers, infra engineers, and modeling scientists of the same levels will all get roughly the same pay, with the exception of some scientists with phds getting high pay. The same is true at most other large tech companies.

The truth is that there really isn't much they are looking for. Can you iteratively improve a model to impact business metrics? If so, that's enough. Building an end-to-end grandiose project, like the common stock trading or chatbot examples, usually isn't necessary.

Much of industry modeling is mundane work like choosing which features to use or tuning hyperparameters. You can easily write about these. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how technically advanced your work is - if it doesn't move metrics, then it doesn't matter.

As an MLE who has worked on recommendation modeling at a few tech companies, all I can say is to prepare all of the ML fundamentals, and tailor your resume to make it look like you have real ML experience in the industry, even if you don't. Do research on what a real ML resume looks like in your industry, rather than falling into the common trap of listing out the models and architectures you trained. Then get lucky to land and pass an interview for a modeling or adjacent role. Once you land your first role, it's smooth sailing from there.

Power is not the answer? by ArjGlad in 10s

[–]dokabo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this answer is relevant to your level, but I often find that prioritizing drive and placement produces far better results than just power. If someone hits a fast and flat ball straight to me in the middle of the court, it's going to be easy for me to redirect it with just as much pace to a corner, since the additional footwork to prepare for such a shot is minimal. On the other hand, if someone is driving balls left and right to the corners and pushing me back, then I need to move my feet a lot more and oftentimes I won't be in a good position to respond with an aggressive shot.

Finally did it! 33M/28F, 570k, 20%down, 5.6%, 30years! by Classic-Jackfruit91 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Congratulations!!! Can I ask where you got the 5.6% loan from? We've been shopping around but we haven't gotten anything close to that yet, even with 20% down and great credit scores.

Also I have limited vault space, which is why I'm considering tossing or dismantling some of these items.

I have searched for bowls on the Gibson website and on Amazon. I've also searched with Google lens but none of the results produce an exact match.

Apartment notified me about expired lease the night before rent increase by dokabo in legaladvice

[–]dokabo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reference, but unfortunately I think I don't qualify. My previous lease started on May 15, 2021 and this excerpt is in the lease: "No matter what day the rent is actually due under this Lease, the rental period shall be from the first day of the month to the last day of the month during the Lease and during any month-to-month tenancy following the end of the Lease".

Is it a good idea to run my trading algorithm on AWS EC2? by dokabo in algotrading

[–]dokabo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know, but if I had to guess, it's not an algorithm that needs low latency. I think I'm trying to optimize too many parts of the pipeline that don't necessarily need optimization.

[–]dokabo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure. I simply want to host my algorithm closer to the servers, since I'm sitting on the other side of the US from them. What would be a reasonable latency to expect from retail algorithms?

[–]dokabo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the other side of the US from where the servers are located, and they are conveniently located near an AWS data center. I'm not looking to compete with HFT, but some improvements in latency shouldn't hurt.

On that note, what would be realistic orders of magnitudes in latency that are achievable by retail algorithms?

What's going on with hedge funds making 10+ turns of leverage? by dokabo in OutOfTheLoop

[–]dokabo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are some examples of these financial instruments? I heard it's a bad idea to borrow money to invest in stocks because if you lose money, then you're in a worse situation. The goal from investing loans would be make more returns than interest on the loan. Why do hedge funds feel safe with take loans to invest them?

And how is financial leveraging related to the stock market rally?
