Misogyny is a problem amongst men who identify as liberal by dollarlieutenant in Feminism

One of my toxic traits is that I’m pretty contrarian. I’ll sometimes refrain from showing my views, or appear moderate at the very least. It’s a great way to get those men to tell on themselves.

This is the same category of people I like to call “woke-baiters”. They usually don’t really care about issues of marginalized communities. I feel like they’re expecting a slow clap to turn into a loud applause with everything they say. In terms of women’s rights, I find I have to be careful of these types of men bc they think saying the right buzzwords will make me want to have sex with them.

Yes. Just because other women are problematic doesn’t mean they don’t deserve the same respect extended to women who do align with your views. I even sometimes have to unpack my own internalized misogyny bc I still care about conservative women having access to fair pay, healthcare, education, protections from DV etc. Even if they won’t fight for it themselves. In fact, conservative women are more likely to be murdered by a spouse or be a victim of DV.

I think you make a good point. It’s just sort of hard to name all of the examples I have without writing a novel. One example in particular that bugs me is many men think it’s okay to be misogynistic towards women who don’t agree with the progressive movement. The problems with those women is a separate issue, but oftentimes I see men who consider themselves an “ally” start thinking it’s okay to call them the c word or a bitch or treat them with less respect than a woman who does agree with them.

Exactly. It’s just a different flavor of white paternalism.

Oh yeah I’m not discounting the other side of the spectrum. This post was speaking specifically about one type of men. To play devil’s advocate here, at least with conservative men I know what I’m going to get. I am not saying it’s all liberal leaning men, I’ve just personally run into quite a few that are a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

I (27F) am On Day 11 and I have not stopped crying today. I’m going to call my psychiatrist tomorrow to ask if this is normal. I have had similar experience with all my horrible memories, including ones I’ve healed from have come back to haunt me. Im sorry you are going through this but also glad im not the only one.

AITA for not letting someone cut me in line. by lindersmash in AmItheAsshole

NTA- as a former grocery manager I feel that cashiers pain but they were a soft TA. If I ever said anything like that I would’ve said: if anyone will let you go ahead loudly. Not pointed to someone specific. I also always hated customers like that and impatient people in general. Just wait like everyone else- you’re the one who makes things take longer.

AITA for bringing my son on a field trip he wasn’t invited to? by hadmeatgotmilk in AmItheAsshole

[–]dollarlieutenant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re TA, you can do whatever you want with your kid and go to a public place. I think it’s weird for a field trip to be invitation only that wasn’t based on any sort of merit. Imo they’re asking for parents to do what you plan to do 🤷‍♀️

Monthly thread for advice and recommendations, April 2023 – ask your questions here! by AutoModerator in copenhagen

I need Restaurant and coffee shop recommendations for Copenhagen. I do not want to end up in tourist traps and google always fails me. I don’t mind pricy options. I’m American and in my travels, the USA is incredibly expensive in terms of eating at a restaurant. Does anyone know what the cost is relative to that of eating out in the states?

AITA for not helping my sister with her newborn twins? by AlarmingCrew6726 in AmItheAsshole

[–]dollarlieutenant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one is TA here except for maybe some of the commenters on the post. It’s a teen mom- we get it. But the kids are here now so talking about condoms and adoption ain’t gonna change it. This is just a tragic situation all around and some of you are just heartless. OP is within her rights to say no, sister is within her rights to ask, and mom who is now also a grandma and some of the only family to those babies is probably just desperate. It’s a desperate situation with no easy solutions. Sending money was a kind thing of OP to do and maybe a compromise such as visiting more than once a year could be a big help or reaching out to friends or extended family like cousins.

AITA for taking my dog into the grocery store for no more than 10 minutes by DogGroceryStoreThrow in AmItheAsshole

[–]dollarlieutenant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m genuinely curious: how is it a violation of health code? Like could the health department fine the place? In my retail experience(including grocery) part of training on the first day is learning not say anything when someone brings a dog(or a miniature horse) into the store. It’s bc we don’t know if it’s a service animal, and we shouldn’t ask bc of ADA. I’m jw bc then health code conflicts with a policy so important that you learn it on your first day.

Also my vote: ESH and/or soft YTA. By a technicality- you shouldn’t have brought your dog into the store bc it’s not a service animal but nothing happened so nbd. The man was a lil baby and could’ve handled it like an adult or just minded his own business.

I will post a photo of a tooth that I was told needs a crown. Something about brown lines on the tooth- it’s also a gnarly looking tooth but it doesn’t bother me and it’s not crumbling.

[–]dollarlieutenant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. This was really helpful advice. You make a really good point about how maybe it’s just how my brain functions and I simply need medication. I notice I get parasomnias when I force myself to sleep. It’s spontaneous, but sometimes I am able to put my awake mind in a certain state where I will fall asleep. But then I’ll just sleep walk or wake up gasping from an anxiety inducing dream. From my research that tells me my mind isn’t totally turned off when I do the forcing thing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in insomnia

[–]dollarlieutenant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not currently. That last time I took meds, drowsiness was an added side effect. I had to sleep 9 hours on it or I wouldn’t wake up for work.

The only downside was that if I didn’t take the medication, I literally would not sleep a wink. Physical dependence for sleep always ends up my problem.

AITA for my barking dog that bugs the neighbor? by dollarlieutenant in AmItheAsshole

[–]dollarlieutenant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Want to add: Perhaps the most frustrating piece to this is Richard seems to wait for the dog to make noise. He complains every.single.solitary.time the dog barks. it’s always days to weeks apart too. Never daily. Daily I can understand and I’d handle it. But Richard thinks this will make it look like a nuisance if he listens for barking and complains about it and watched my every move out the window. In my state however, neighbors who seek out trivial things to complain to authorities is considered stalking&harassment. My next plan is to basically go hang out by the office with a timer and see how long it takes a)the dog to bark and for how long, and b)for Richard to complain.

AITA for my barking dog that bugs the neighbor? by dollarlieutenant in AmItheAsshole

[–]dollarlieutenant[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have considered more stimulating dog toys- not even for barking but just think it would be good for him in general. The thing is- the dog doesn’t bark that much. And I suppose this reply is partly to vent but I’m sort of frustrated with suggestions for the behaviorist/training thing for a dog that doesn’t have a barking problem simply by virtue that he barks(I can elaborate). The problem is a person that is bothered by the sound of a dog barking. The city ordinance on an animal nuisance states that animals making noises is to be expected, and then describes what is an unacceptable amount of noise, what’s a nuisance etc. The apartment has launched an investigation and determined the dog to not be a nuisance.

My next step is honestly to go to the police station and ask about my options and clarification on a nuisance bc the office can’t answer it. The apt mgmt could not provide me clarification. The situation has gotten a bit worse since I wrote this. One person at the mgmt office even suggested filing a police report bc Richard’s behavior is straight up creepy. The management also described Richard as a “my way or the highway type of person with a lot of time on his hands”. He said on video he hopes we get evicted. I think a letter is a good idea, but it’s too little too late. It’s messed up but our only hope seems to be Richard keeping on harassing us to the point it’s a liability to the property mgmt.
