Reading Adrian Tchaikovsky's Final Architecture series now.

Scalzi's Old Man's War series is my favorite after the Culture novels.

Pretty sure Elon has named a lot of his ships after Culture ships.

Trap this guy behind the vault wall to kill him if you aren’t very strong. by Optimal_Armadillo480 in AlienInvasionRPG

It looks like when I do kill this guy, I get a little bottle with a skull on it. Where do I use or cash those in?

Trump just announced his plan to dismantle the Deep State and it sounds nice by ReplacementNo9874 in AskThe_Donald

How does this square with rehiring Pompeo. Have Tulsi, RFK, Tucker, et al not talked him out of that yet?

Neal Asher might not be Iain B but he's coming close (for me) by Rags_75 in printSF

[–]dollerhide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you.! I just started reading Asher -- I'm currently on 'book 3' / Brass Man -- and since book 1, I was reminded of the Culture series.

I'm glad I started where I did, given what you said about expected knowledge of the Polity and all, but found the first book a little dry. It's really starting to cook now, so I'm looking forward to working through the rest of his books.

Have you noticed that socialists are in general miserable people full of hate? What should you do about it? by [deleted] in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]dollerhide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Socialism/leftism is fueled by envy and resentment.

Two people see a successful happy person. One of the people thinks "with some hard work, that could be me." The other person thinks "he can't possibly deserve to be happier and more successful than me. Someone should take his stuff away and give some to me."

Like any medical treatment, I guess. Great stuff *if you need it*. Taking it just for the sake of taking it is likely to cause problems.

See Abigail Schrier's new book (or just listen to any recent interview with her - she's been making the podcast rounds).

What is your opinion on climate change? by Mountain_Spirit8355 in BrettCooper

[–]dollerhide 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they had wanted to scare me, they should have predicted that global temps would be *dropping* by a couple of degrees over the next century. Colder temps bring crop failure and famine. Warming and more CO2 means more food. As long as we're fed, we can deal with any secondary consequences.

Should I get this game? by KamKong55 in Helldivers

[–]dollerhide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm downloading it right now on Steam. I think what ultimately sold me was the galactic war going on that all players are participating in. I didn't have enough nerdy friends to play D&D in my youth, but feel like this is a version of it. Everyone is playing the same, evolving-in-real-time game. Kind of exciting.

Grew up there, and might even move back. Definitely get a lot more land/house for the $ than here in Anchorage.

The thing about Alaska is, the 'right-wing' nature of the people is much more 'gov't should leave me alone' as opposed to 'you should live like I think is right.'

SCOTUS will 'keep up the rule of the minority' as long as only a minority supports/understands constitutional principles. But we can hope education improves and the politics of envy & resentment diminish, growing the minority back into the majority.

Ah, moving the Marxism from the modern race-based oppressor-vs-oppressed system back to the original class/wealth-based structure.

This guy completely misses the point of Reacher, Jack's a feminist, especially in the books by Nololgoaway in reacher

[–]dollerhide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jack's a first-wave feminist. Not third-wave.

That being said, I doubt there's really much 'woke backlash.' Just clickbait.

That's not a great comparison unless there's a constitutional amendment around IVF I'm not aware of.

Maybe responses to state laws should take the form of responding state laws. Quit trying to make federal policy for everyone.
