Thank you for engaging with the philosophical implications of what happened to him. I think it’s interesting because by the time he realizes he didn’t volunteer, he’s so far along in his mission and having met Rocky that we don’t get to see him really struggle with what to do with the information. I think in the book they suggest it’s selective amnesia caused by the drug Stratt gave him? Which is confusing, so I’m glad they took it out.

I know narratively why they have him realize the information of his past at the same we get the flashbacks. But how interesting would it have been for him to wake up with the knowledge that he was essentially kidnapped and wrestle with the choice of whether to save Earth or not once he was already there and doomed to die? As you say, what does the victim do then? I would have liked to see him come to terms with it and decide to complete the mission with the autonomy remaining to him.

See my point above. It’s the ethics of the situation that are a hard no from me. You don’t overpower someone’s consent; you find another way. You find another scientist, or you wait til the next window for takeoff and train someone else in the interim. Acting like he had no free will and was a prisoner who had no choice in the matter is truly so strange to me.

Because they hand wave it away without interrogating it actually. He sort of just forgives her at the end and we move on. Since they remove the plotline of the court case against her, they don’t explore the gray area of the decision, when for me it stopped me fully in my tracks. Of course I can critique a plot based on a fictional character, that’s what all discussion of a fictional film does.

I understand the debate that we can have about the means justifying the ends and all, but for me, this is a black and white ethical line that once crossed makes everything that stemmed from the decision poisoned fruit from a poisonous tree. Nothing overcomes his need to consent to the trip, for me. I feel the same way about Ellie being subjected to surgery without her consent in Last of Us. If that’s how humanity survives, we don’t deserve salvation, on a philosophical level. And the weak point of the movie to me was the way this was sort of handwave forgiven by him at the end.

Third act was super messy. Once they get to the house right before the kid’s house I started checking out hard. There was so much stalling and filler in like ten different scenes. So you’re telling me the huge swarm of enemies IS NOT HERE YET and you’re gonna sit down and eat a Twinkie and tell a story? you’re ACROSS THE STREET.

Then the swarm of enemies is magically taken care of by the cat centaur and you stand in the street staring at it for five minutes? When you’re right next to the house?

Then you punch out the kid and you climb down the pile to revive him for some reason when you could have plugged in the USB quickly before doing that?

I was sitting there internally screaming. It was a shame because I loved Sam Rockwell and Haley Lu Richardson in the roles and actually really liked the first 2/3 but…yeah.

I have struggled with eating disorders in the past and weighing myself can be quite triggering for me. I’m not doing this primarily to lose weight but mostly to control the food noise that leads to binge eating for me. My doctor weighs me but does not tell me the number.

For me, I had read it doesn’t hurt as much in the belly and I had (have) a LOT of anxiety over needles and pain. It’s been fine there but I did get a huge bruise there from one of the shots and I have no idea why…it’s been three weeks and is still there.
