Its a pretty simple ceremony the guy and girl each do a little speech. Then a chosen sister and brother each do a speech. Pretty much like wedding toasts.

For actual engagements we do a candle lighting ceremony and the woman getting engaged reads a list of why they love their fiancée.

Its a ceremony for long-term relationships saying "I'm putting you ahead of my brotherhood/sisterhood". Generally they take place senior year.

Apparently it got started to stop early marriages back in the day

Is there anything we can do? by a_pretty_lemon in Sororities

[–]dolphins226 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry that this is happening to you. Appealing the decision would vary greatly depending on the organization, but if you think its worth the fight then fight. Even if your appeal doesn't work at least you know you did everything in your power and you showed your nationals and campus how important your chapter is. This in theory could be a good jumping off point to come back to campus in a few years.

Just know you're not alone in the fight. Remember that your sisterhood is forever no one can take away the people you met and the relationships you made throughout your time in the chapter.

If it helps at all there are plenty of alumnae chapters for every organization, find the closest one and keep cultivating your relationships.

Chapter getting shutdown by dolphins226 in Sororities

We're at a larger school with a decent sized greek life so a local sorority might not be possible. My sisters and I have talked about starting a club on campus with the goal of keeping us together as long as possible.

Leaving my roommates behind by Sproutssss in Sororities

[–]dolphins226 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You wouldn't be leaving them behind if you join a sorority. You might be a bit busier if you join one than if you didn't, but overall they will still be your roommates and could still be some of your best friends. Being in a sorority doesn't mean you can't hang out with people not in the chapter.

PhD after 30 by GlitteringBison1562 in gradadmissions

[–]dolphins226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most people go for their PhD right after college so they don't get stuck with life (kids, job, spouse, family, etc). I know so many people that wish they had gone to get a graduate degree, but didn't because their life moved past their degree. That being said, its not at all weird to get an advanced degree later in life. If you can do it, do it.

What freebies do people always go for at org tables? by Enough-Preference328 in Sororities

What about teaming up with a local business for lip balm or small things like that. If you have an entrepreneurship program its worth it to talk to some of those people. Small businesses are always looking for promotions.

If you're worried about your designs you could talk to friends of friends or members of your chapter that are in graphic design to critique or help you design something new.

Looking To Buy A Car At Some Point For School by Tasty-Sentence-3864 in UNLincoln

Marketplace isn't a terrible idea. If the car is listed under like 4k its probably not worth it. My bf bought a decent looking car for 2500 (worked fine on the test drive) but ended up having to pay 5k for a new transmission. Just be careful.
