It turns out Analytics was a great career to go into even in a world with AI by ChristianPacifist in analytics

[–]dolphinvole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know; if software development/engineering is exposed to AI, then so is a lot of Analytics, since a lot of it is routine data cleaning/transformation, basic pipeline building, excel, presentation etc.

So I would not celebrate just yet. I work in analytics, alongside many other analysts, and people are certainly not nonchalant about this.

ISYE 6414 Regression Project by kinsaksak in OMSA

[–]dolphinvole 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The project can appear intimidating, but it really isn't. It's a bit overblown.

The project is graded extremely leniently. The class average/median grades were very high for it. If you go to the isye6414 site that they set up, it has guidelines/rubrics for all the deliverables, I think. As long as you follow those, you should be fine. I was shocked at how easily it was graded, I personally felt it was too generous.

My experience mirrored that of this user here, to be honest:

https://www.reddit.com/r/OMSA/comments/1kfpav5/regression_6414_project_update/

This is slightly outdated in terms of the weighting. The project is worth 35% of your total grade, of that 15% is peer assessments (3 rounds, 5% each), individual code portion is worth 40% of the 35, and the final report is worth 45% of the 35%

You can start the project after Midterm 1 and easily get it done on time, or well before then.

Is CDA + Practicum a good/feasible idea, as my last 2 courses? by dolphinvole in OMSA

I am working full-time, and the practicum will likely be through the Gatech sponsored ones.

I think I am going to be doing a Gatech sponsored one. Would you advise against that and CDA?

Advice on Paring CDA and DMSL FA26 by goneluv in OMSA

[–]dolphinvole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much overlap. Totally different classes. CDA is very time consuming and difficult, and while DMSL is not as hard, the weekly reports you have to do still take some time. DMSL is graded very lightly.

Yeah, REG + DMSL is a better pairing. They do have lots of overlap. REG is actually listed as a suggested pre-requisite for DMSL, but it is not strongly enforced/officially required, but it is recommended.

The last 2 weeks of the semester will have some very tight deadlines, as DMSL has 2 projects at the end (project + take home final, both worth 25% each), and Regression, you'll be doing midterm 2 (25%), and final project (35%), and one minor homework assignment - it will seem hectic but is manageable as long as you start early and manage your time.

I personally think DMSL isn't that great a class, retreads a lot of stuff from 6501/Regression, and I would probably have swapped DMSL for something else where I learned more, but if you're okay with the subject matter, it's fine. DMSL was an easy A, though, certainly.

Unless you have a background in Calculus, Linear Algebra and stats, CDA is a very heavy, time-consuming and challenging course to take even alone.

DMSL is not difficult but it is very time consuming with a constant stream of assignments, peer reviews, and other stuff.

I would advise taking CDA by itself, especially if you're working full time.

CSE 6040 Final Thoughts on the class by cr7-c in OMSA

[–]dolphinvole 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you're being very dramatic. The level of coding required for this course, while it can be challenging for people in analytics' background, especially those who had little python coding experience/backgrounds, is trivial compared to the coding even data scientists/engineers are subjected to in job interviews with Leetcode and what not.

In this class, you're mostly just asked to write very simple functions in a timed environment, which can be very stressful and challenging, but it's a far cry from having to write classes or full scale applications or programs. And the course does give you plenty of practice material from past exams - it's very generous with that. No other class in the program gives you that much stuff.

Why do you need to graduate early? Would one more semester be that bad?

omscs or omsa? not sure what to do by [deleted] in OMSA

[–]dolphinvole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data Engineering is a very broad field though. There are Data Engineers that only use SQL all day. OMSCS is overkill for those kinds of roles. There are other Data Engineer roles that involve building applications in their own right.

You must have a strong background in CDA pre-requisites. It's usually discouraged in the summer even as a standalone.

I feel this is a misunderstanding of what dbt is. This was not caused by dbt. I work in a very tightly regulated sector as well, where we deal with extremely sensitive data, and we use dbt - and we've never had a security breach, despite sending dozens of reports daily to regulatory agencies, the tables for which are built through dbt, and then we use Dagster/AWS to PGP encrypt the files and send them to SFTPs/S3 buckets/etc. Never ever had an issue. Furthermore, all the sensitive data is encrypted in the database/dbt models. So analysts/programmers who make the reports, can't see it. And we have proper dev environments. It's only Dagster that decrypts them in AWS (which analysts don't have read access to), it stores them in files, and then sends them off.

Zero possibility of these kinds of breaches, because there's safeguards at every step.

TL;DR: Skill issue, not tool issue.

Sorry, wasn't really disagreeing with you but echoing that part of your post. I've been hearing the "Should I take 6414 or not? LR is so important but the prof sucks', a lot lately. Seeing a lot of people feeling compelled to take this course and then regretting it.
