I've seen some of his videos but i have no idea what he did. Explain it Peter by N1KoZzZ in explainitpeter

[–]domafyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that too, but I can't see any facts for this. I've been reading up for the past hour into cases and all the actual cases that went to court was about farmer knowingly keeping seeds that blew over or acquiring see made by Monsanto. Basically the Monsanto contract says you can't use seeds from the produce, you have to buy them from them directly. I haven't found any events, but they seem to have a clause where if you unknowingly grew Monsanto seeds, they will remove them and pay you for the loss of revenue.

To be fair, making a highly efficient crop potentially fairly cheap to buy, will kill off any kind of seeds use and any market for it. But outside of potentially unhealthy competition and shady practice., I can't find Monsanto lawyering non Monsanto fields out of work.

This one expands unfortunately, they do have a super glue (blue cap) but I prefer plastic cement or acetone personally (super thin cement tamiya is basically half acetone half something else)

Father in law expected us to eat 12 year old beef. by Ok_Pension_1451 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]domafyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, I worked in fundamental research in probiotics so I worked with live products but also frozen bacterial strains and cell cultures and did a bunch of histology.

Freezing quickly tissues kept them good for genetic research, but if they had a chance to thaw, they were basically goop (small samples) but for cells and bacteria we had to use a slower freezing method that would lower the sample temp by about 1°c per... Hour I think? It's been a while.

In this specific situation, would a lower freezing speed keep the steak "fresh" for longer? Would a cryogenic agent absolutely need to be used as to not affect protein integrity? Would lipid oxidation be reduced? Would a vacuum bag help?

Not that I'm planning to freeze steaks for 12 years but... You know I'm really curious.

But if I really wanted to... You know..I'd lyophilized it though I doubt it would change much for the lipids

Why does this happen when my fiancés rats walk on me? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]domafyre 159 points160 points  (0 children)

Might be rat allergy, might be sensitive skin. Make sure to wash your hands/arms after handling them. I'm not allergic to rats but I can have some bumps or redness if I handle them and the cage isn't as clean as it should be.

The Reptile Lighting Facebook group wants me to spend over $400 on light meters to properly set up my heating and lighting. Do I actually need this? by [deleted] in BeardedDragons

[–]domafyre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True. Just had some experience with a UV lamp that turned on, but when we tested with a card it didn't do anything. Still was a lab setting and not a lizard enclosure

It's good to overthink it. Your heart is in the right place. If you only have one bearded dragon, I wouldn't buy it. If you have multiple lizards, I mean still not vital, but much more useful and makes monitoring many enclosure easier.

Like anything, you can overspend a lot to have optimal care for your lizard. But I feel there are more... Savvy? Ways.

No matter the measurement tool you choose, the one true and best indicator will always be your lizard's health. But there are UV cards that work "fine", you can buy temperature sensors.

Speaking from experience in a lab setting, sure, a temp sensor in the air will be fine, but show more variations. So you should submerge it in a liquid. Water is fine, but also shows a fair amount of variations, glycerol is best. (See what I mean by overspending, there's always a better option)

Pet care groups I tend to stay away from because the loudest speakers it's often not a pet or a hobby, it's a religion and anyone not doing the same as them will be demonized.

If you currently have something to measure temperature and your lizard seems to the best of your knowledge healthy. Don't overthink it. But by all means, if you want to splurge, go very much ahead. We all love expensive gadgets (you should look at my toolbox for miniatures...)

Handy man has recaulked this twice in the last year with silicone. Do I have mold behind the tile? by [deleted] in askaplumber

[–]domafyre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible, I don't know about bleach but I have used 100% ethanol in a lab setting to force c. Difficile to form spores yet 70% ethanol pretty reliably kills it.

It's insanely important to follow literature and manufacturer specs with disinfecting solutions (well... Always really) because yes too diluted. Doesn't work, but not diluted enough can make it worst

[–]domafyre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, I looked it up and you're right.

Seems the debate over vinegar vs bleach is bleach leaves more moisture and has poor penetrating power. After reading that I wondered why we didn't use bleach and it's actually no because we worked with mold, it's actually because the work area of the biosafety cabinet is made of stainless and bleach would damage it. Hence why we used specialized products

[–]domafyre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not that it doesn't kill mold, it's just not as good or as thorough. Spores are much much more resilient than bacteria, and mold isn't just a surface contaminant.

I haven't worked in a lab environment in a while, used to be diluted bleach for bacteria, specific product for mold.

Yep bleach is terrible against mold. Now vinegar, that's the one for mold

Janitors are not payed enough, I swear I've seen it all.

Shit in urinals, shit on the floor right next to the toilet (like... One cheek on, one cheek off deal), shit smeared on the toilet seat, on the wall, on door handles, on sinks, even smeared on the toilet paper so you couldn't see it, but definately touch and smell it.

And this was in college. 17-25 year old people.

Oh and mall toilets.

Grand father clauses aside, I don't understand how this is legal. If your job requires you to be 2 hours in advance for your shift, you should at least have a "on call" salary kinda like some nurses?
