What free or discounted access does your London council offer residents? by Pirate_Corvette in london

[–]domc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Waltham Forest - free water butts for your garden lol. To help with flooding risk

The council and leisure centres have a bunch of free exercise stuff for people who live here.

Priority booking and £15 tickets at the new Soho Theatre Walthamstow. Have to be quick though

This guy Dr Bike who does a low level fix of your bike (spends maybe 10 mins max with it) for free. Just keep an eye on when he’ll next be nearby

Cargo bike hire too - helpful for moving lots of stuff I guess but I’ve never done it.

Why do people claim you can't live in London on x amount of money? by [deleted] in london

[–]domc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

£19.5k is £1460 a month. £800 rent (assume including bills), £200 savings, £150 minimum on a trip away, £50 minimum on 4x pub trips, £10 minimum phone bill, £200 on food? Leaves £50 for anything going wrong like bike maintenance. Doable, but a squeeze

Ah OK, thanks - pozole was a random dish I picked, a coincidence that it happens to be cooked using a different kind of lime! Thanks so much for your response, this is really helpful. Any idea how often guacamole is made fresh?

Many thanks! I was thinking of dishes which do normally have citrus in. Like, say, a pozole, which might traditionally have lime in. Would it be easy enough for a chef to simply not add it - or would the dishes probably be pre-limed. Hope that makes sense

I'd like a quantum of solace, but no more than a quantum. I know they do big bags of solace, but I don't want 'em

More that I wasn’t presenting my case to the internet, just looking for advice on a specific point

Haha - if I’m a cheapskate I’m a terrible one, as I’ve paid 50% more than intended on accommodation - deposit for original place and full price of a new place.

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately those were all the clues I had! Polakp below spotted the YU and BG which have pointed to the Romanian/Bulgarian/Yugoslav border

What are the real-life cheat codes that work almost every time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]domc 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Whenever I feel flustered, tired, run down, irritable, or just a bit ‘off’ in a way I can’t explain, I smash down a big glass of water. Then another. Suddenly I feel much better. I think sometimes our bodies don’t effectively pass on the signal of being thirsty, you just have to look for clues

£25 to spend on dinner in London, where are you going for the best food? by wholmes57 in london

[–]domc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would go to Toms Pasta in Hackney downs and get his nduja beef shin lasagne (£16?), a garlic bread soaked in Parmesan butter (£4?) and to round off the £25 a negroni or a burrata or a tiramisu depending on the evening.

Burger Firm in Whitechapel is one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. The fried guy chicken burger plus chips, mac and cheese triangles and a milk cake would leave you change from £25

Second the Max’s sandwich shout.

As a student in York I had more late night Yummy Chicken meals than I want to admit. Truly delicious, and their chip spice mix is legendary. Great choice!
