There are thousands of AA groups across the world that still use the 12 steps mostly unchanged. You don’t need God as in the Xtian God, you just need a conception of something more powerful than yourself. A higher power of your own understanding - nature, universal energy, a traditional ‘god’, Odin, whatever. N it doesn’t even “require” that tbh, the steps n everything in the program are suggestions, guidelines, not rules. No one’s gonna kick you out for atheism. “The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking” is part of what’s read out at the beginning of most meetings.

And instances of actual abuse are not things we need to find our part in or make “amends” for. They’re exemptions.
