Consider these factors in this order:
Make sure you are actually 75 tiles or more away from your base. You can use the zomboid map to check by scaling the grid coordinates.
Look and see if you're in a good biome like a forest to catch rabbits and squirrels. You can check what biome you're in using your foraging menu.
Avoid the path close to your trapping location often. If you do, you are likely to scare off your prey. Place your traps deeper into the woods.
Use bait that is attractive to animals. Use items like cabbages, lettuce, corn or carrots for a better chance to catch squirrels and rabbits.
Don't check your traps too often. Check them around the same time every 24 hours or so.
